An ammunition cartridge having a cup-shaped casing. The cup-shaped casing has a closed reward end with a rearward diameter and an open forward end having a forward diameter that is larger than the rearward diameter. A sidewall extends between the peripheries of the rearward end and the top end of the casing. The sidewall tapers from the smaller rearward diameter to the larger forward diameter along a length of a hollow interior of the casing that holds a propellant charge.

The present invention is an improved .30 caliber cartridge that overcomes the limitations of the prior art by providing a centerfire cartridge with a case having a head with a rim, a body extending from the head to a tapered shoulder to a mouth that seats a bullet. The cartridge having a dimension that is short enough to fit in an automatic pistol's magazine and when fired from such a pistol's barrel will achieve ballistics closely resembling that of a rifle carbine.

Gun and ammunition solutions which permit the use of High Explosive (HE) rounds and Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) rounds in one weapon. A first system has a gun barrel chamber sized to receive the outer cases of both APFSDS and HE rounds. The chamber has a smooth rear section which abuts a front section having internal helical rifling. A HE round has an outer case with a length that is the same as the length of the smooth rear section of the barrel. A projectile held by the case has a rotating band on a rear end configured to engage the internal helical rifling in the chamber. A second system has a conventional smooth barrel and utilizes a HE round with an outer case having internal rifling in a forward section. A projectile held by the outer case has a circular band mounted to rotate about a rear end thereof to engage the internal rifling.

LIGHTWEIGHT CARTRIDGE CASE

The present invention discloses a lightweight hybrid cartridge case (100) for a cartridged ammunition and a method of manufacture (200). The lightweight hybrid cartridge case (100) includes a cap (110) with a cylindrical sidewall (112) connected a base (120); a polymer shell (150) is insert-molded onto the sidewall of the cap; and an overmolded sleeve (180) is formed to cover the metal-polymer joint between the cap (110) and the polymer sleeve (150). The cylindrical sidewall (112) covered by the overmolded sleeve (180) has a plurality of stepped ridges (132, 132a), preferably with one stepped ridge (133) having a C-stepped edge (134).
