EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
An exhaust system for an internal combustion engine and having at least an exhaust duct, which originates from the internal combustion engine and has an end part, which ends with an outlet opening, through which exhaust gases are released into the atmosphere. The end part of the exhaust duct has at least one movable wall, which can be moved to different positions to vary the width of the outlet opening. There are provided a motor-driven actuator device, which is configured to move the movable wall and can be electronically controlled, and a control unit, which is configured to vary, by controlling the actuator device, the position of the movable wall depending on a rotation speed of the internal combustion engine and on an engine load of the internal combustion engine.
Methods and system for diagnosing active exhaust valves based on temperature and thermal image data
Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing an active exhaust valve in an exhaust system based on thermal data. In one example, a method may include indicating degradation of a first active exhaust valve positioned in a first exhaust pipe of a first engine bank based on a difference between a first temperature of exhaust downstream of the first active exhaust valve and a second temperature of exhaust downstream of a second active exhaust valve positioned in a second exhaust pipe of a second engine bank. Degradation of the valve may be confirmed based on thermal image data acquired at outlets of the first and second exhaust pipes.
MULTI-MODE EXHAUST MUFFLER
A multi-mode muffler for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine provides a rotary plate that modulates exhaust gas flow between a first and second flow path. Each flow path may provide different sound dampening characteristics, thereby providing different sound profiles with the same muffler. In a disclosed embodiment, the rotary plate is driven by a shaft coupled to an external actuator. Also, a third possible position of the rotary plate may allow flow through both the first and second flow paths, thereby providing a third possible noise profile. One of the sound profiles may be louder than the other thereby allowing the muffler to switch between “loud” and “quiet” modes of operation.

Piloted exhaust line valve and corresponding production method
A valve includes a valve body having an exhaust gas inlet and an exhaust gas outlet, the valve body defining an exhaust gas circulation passage between the exhaust gas inlet and the exhaust gas outlet. A flap is arranged in the valve body and a shaft drives the flap in rotation with respect to the valve body. At least one guide bearing guides the drive shaft of the flap for rotation relative to the valve body. The guide bearing is engaged through an orifice of the valve body, with an inner end of the guide bearing being located inside the valve body. A first tube is engaged in one of the exhaust gas inlet and exhaust gas outlet and abuts against the inner end of the guide bearing.

MUFFLER FOR VEHICLE
A muffler for a vehicle includes: a muffler shell; a baffle disposed within the muffler shell, and having a first opening and a second opening which allow an exhaust gas to pass therethrough; and a variable valve mounted on the baffle. In particular, the variable valve includes: a valve plate rotatably mounted to open and close the first opening of the baffle; a valve arm connected to the valve plate; and a valve actuator to move the valve arm by variations in pressure of the exhaust gas. The valve plate is capable of rotating in a plane parallel to a plane of the baffle.

ADAPTIVE EXHAUST VALVE WITH PURPOSE-DESIGNED SPRING
An internal combustion engine system includes a combustion engine configured to produce exhaust gases as a product of a combustion reaction. An exhaust discharge pipe coupled to the internal combustion engine, and an adaptive valve assembly. The adaptive valve assembly is coupled to the exhaust discharge pipe and configured to receive the exhaust gases prior to the exhaust gases reaching the atmosphere. The adaptive valve assembly includes a valve flapper arranged in the passageway and configured to pivot about a flapper pivot axis from a normally-closed position to an opened position.
