SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR DETERMINING AMOUNT OF REDUCTANT DEPOSITS IN AFTERTREATMENT SYSTEMS
An aftertreatment system comprises a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit, a reductant injector configured to insert reductant into the aftertreatment system, a first NO.sub.x sensor configured to measure an amount of NO.sub.x gases at a location upstream of the reductant injector, and a second NO.sub.x sensor configured to measure an amount of NO.sub.x gases at a location downstream of the SCR unit. A controller is programmed to estimate an amount of reductant deposits formed in the aftertreatment system based on at least the amount of NO.sub.x gases measured at the location upstream of the reductant injector, the amount of NO.sub.x gases measured at the location downstream of the SCR unit, and an amount of reductant that has been inserted into the aftertreatment system. The controller adjusts an amount of reductant to be inserted into the aftertreatment system based on the estimated amount of reductant deposits formed in the aftertreatment system.
CONTROL DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
When a temperature increasing process is performed, a CPU sets a target temperature of a catalyst to be lower when a coolant temperature is low than when the coolant temperature is high. The CPU decreases an increase coefficient of fuel in the temperature increasing process when a value obtained by subtracting an estimated value of a temperature of the catalyst from the target temperature is equal to or less than a first prescribed value.
System and method to mitigate sensor failures due to water condensation
A diagnostic system (10) is provided and includes a sensor (24) disposed downstream from an exhaust gas aftertreatment system. Also included in the diagnostic system (10) is a central diagnostic unit (35) configured to diagnose a condensation condition associated with the sensor (24) for mitigating a sensor failure due to water condensation on the sensor (24), the central diagnostic unit (35) performing the diagnosis on the condensation condition based on water storage and release information related to a component of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system. The sensor (24) is activated based on the water storage and release information.
Method for operating a particulate filter in an exhaust aftertreatment system of a combustion engine
A method for the operation of a particulate filter in an exhaust aftertreatment system of a combustion engine (200) with the following steps: set up (111, 116) a pressure difference model, which models a measured pressure difference (Δp) which drops across the particulate filter (210) as a function (220) of a volume flow ({dot over (V)}) through the particulate filter (210) with an offset value (a.sub.0, C); measure (120) multiple measurement values (245) for the pressure difference (Δp) at different volume flows ({dot over (V)}) and solve (130) the pressure difference model as a function of the pressure difference (Δp), whereby the offset value (a.sub.0, C) is also determined.
Systems and methods for determining an efficiency value associated with a catalyst member
A system comprising an aftertreatment system comprising: a catalyst member, and a first exhaust conduit upstream of the catalyst member; a first temperature sensor operatively coupled to the catalyst member; a flow sensor coupled to the first exhaust conduit; and a controller. The controller determines a temperature of the catalyst member, a flow rate of exhaust within the first exhaust conduit, and a space velocity of the exhaust within the catalyst member. The controller determines a first degradation value indicative of a degradation of the catalyst member. The controller determines a first difference between the first degradation value and a first degradation reference value and a second difference between the first degradation value and a second degradation reference value. After determining that the first difference is less than the second difference, the controller selects a first calibration metric. The controller determines a first efficiency value associated with the catalyst member.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR HOT AIR INJECTION INTO EXHAUST PORTS
Methods and systems are provided for reducing emissions during an engine cold start. In one example, a method may include, during emission control device heating, injecting heated air into an exhaust runner of each cylinder of the engine during an exhaust stroke of the corresponding cylinder, after a blowdown exhaust pulse. In this way, an amount of hydrocarbons in feedgas provided to the emission control device prior to the emission control device reaching its light-off temperature may be reduced.
Method for ascertaining the nitrogen oxide fraction and/or ammonia fraction in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine
Various embodiments of the teachings herein include a method for determining the nitrogen oxide content and/or ammonia content in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine with a catalytic converter arranged in an exhaust tract and an exhaust gas sensor downstream of the catalytic converter. In some embodiments, the method comprises: determining an operating state of the internal combustion engine, the operating state indicating either lean operation or rich operation of the internal combustion engine; generating a signal using the exhaust gas sensor; and determining the nitrogen oxide content and/or ammonia content in the exhaust gas at least partially based on the determined operating state of the internal combustion engine and the signal.

Method and system for diagnosing an aftertreatment system
The present invention relates to a method for diagnosing aftertreatment of exhaust gases resulting from combustion, wherein at least a first substance resulting from said combustion is reduced by supplying additive to an exhaust gas stream resulting from said combustion and use of a first reduction catalytic converter. The method includes: estimating an accumulated expected reduction of said first substance during a first period of time, determining an accumulated actual reduction of said first substance during a period of time at least substantially overlapping said first period of time, and generating a signal indicating a fault in said reduction of said first substance when said accumulated actual reduction differs from said accumulated expected reduction by a predetermined difference in occurrence of said first substance. The invention also relates to a corresponding system.
Method for the model-based open loop and closed loop control of an internal combustion engine
A method for regulation of an internal combustion engine with an SCR catalytic converter in which the operating point of the engine is predefined by an engine control unit and the operating point of the catalytic converter is predefined by an SCR control unit. An overall system quality measure is calculated by an optimizer in accordance with fed back values of the engine control unit and fed back values of the SCR control unit, by changing the default values for the engine control unit and the SCR control unit, the optimizer minimizes the overall system quality measure for a prediction horizon regarding operating costs. On the basis of the minimized overall system quality measure the optimizer sets the default values for the engine control unit and the default values for the SCR control unit as decisive for setting the operating point of the engine and the catalytic converter.
