CONTROL APPARATUS
The control section of a control apparatus executes a first control for operating a voltage application section such as to cause a current to flow in a first direction through a gas sensor in a first period, and a second control for operating the voltage application section such as to cause a current to flow in a second direction, opposite to the first direction, through the gas sensor in a second period. The control apparatus changes the length of at least one of the first period and the second period based on a comparison between a first measurement value, which is the absolute value of a value measured by a sweep measurement section during execution of the first control, and a second measurement value, which is the absolute value of a value measured by the sweep measurement section during execution of the second control.

HYBRID VEHICLE AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE SAME
A hybrid vehicle includes an engine with cylinders generating driving power and a turbocharger having a turbine in an exhaust line, and a compressor which rotates with the turbine and compresses intake gas. An electric supercharger is disposed in the intake line upstream from the compressor, a catalytic converter is disposed in the exhaust line downstream from the turbine. A post processing bypass line connects the exhaust line at a downstream portion of the catalytic converter and the intake line at a downstream portion of the electric supercharger. A low pressure EGR device includes a low pressure EGR line branching off from the exhaust line and merging into the intake line and a low pressure EGR cooler disposed therein. A high pressure EGR device includes a high pressure EGR line branching off from an exhaust system and merging into an intake system, and a high pressure EGR cooler disposed therein.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR OPTIMIZING ENGINE-AFTERTREATMENT SYSTEM OPERATION
Systems and methods for optimizing a performance variable for an engine system. The method includes applying constraints of manipulated variables as well as performance variables, mechanical constraints and other engine responses to response models. The response models each represent a piecewise linear relationship between the manipulated variables and other engine responses including performance variables and constraints. The method also comprises determining an optimal target for each of the manipulated variables by using a quasi-simplex optimization process on the response models. The optimal targets of the manipulated variables correspond to an optimal value of the performance variable.
Internal combustion engine and exhaust-gas-component estimating method
An internal combustion engine, which includes a collection device that is arranged in an exhaust pipe through which an exhaust gas emitted from a cylinder passes and collects PM contained in the exhaust gas and an NOx sensor that is arranged on an upstream side of the collection device and detects an NOx content in the exhaust gas, includes: an estimating device which estimates a PM content in the exhaust gas at the upstream side of the collection device from a detection value of the NOx sensor, based on a trade-off relation between an NOx emission amount and a PM emission amount from the cylinder.
CONFIGURABLE AFTERTREATMENT SYSTEMS INCLUDING A HOUSING
An aftertreatment system for treating constituents of an exhaust gas includes: a housing defining a first internal volume and a second internal volume; an oxidation catalyst in the first internal volume and extending along a first axis, the oxidation catalyst configured to receive at least a portion of the exhaust gas via an inlet conduit fluidly coupled to the oxidation catalyst; a filter in the first internal volume and extending along a second axis parallel to and offset from the first axis, wherein an outlet of the filter is disposed within the second internal volume and configured to emit the exhaust gas into the second internal volume; at least one selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst in the second internal volume and extending along a third axis that is perpendicular to the first axis; and a decomposition tube in the second internal volume in a direction parallel to the third axis.
Systems and methods for optimizing engine-aftertreatment system operation
Systems and methods for controlling a performance variable of an engine system are provided. An apparatus includes a response model circuit structured to apply a constraint to a response model that represents a relationship regarding a manipulated variable or a relationship between the performance variable and the manipulated variable. The apparatus further includes an optimization circuit structured to determine a target for the manipulated variable via the response model such that the target of the manipulated variable satisfies the constraint of the response model. The performance variable is indicative of performance of operation of the engine system and the manipulated variable is capable of affecting the performance variable. Operation of the engine system is adjusted based upon the target of the manipulated variable by controlling at least one of a fuel system or an air handling system of the engine system.
Particulate matter detection apparatus
A particulate matter detection apparatus is provided with an element portion onto which PM contained in exhaust gas of an engine adheres thereto. A heater which heats the element portion, a quantity detecting portion which detects a quantity of the PM based on electrical properties of the element portion and a temperature detecting portion which detects a temperature of the element portion. The apparatus is further provided with a first and second temperature controller. The first temperature controller heats the element portion using a heater in a first period, which excludes a period in which PM adheres to the element portion based on a detected temperature of the element portion. The element portion is heated in a first temperature range to combust soluble organic fractions contained in the PM and resist melting of ash components contained in the PM. The first period excludes a period in which PM adheres to the element portion. The second temperature controller heats the element portion in the second temperature range, which is higher than the first temperature range using the heater, such that ash is combusted, based on a detected temperature of the element portion.
Method for controlling an exhaust flow in an exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) of a vehicle
A method for controlling exhaust flow in an EATS of a vehicle. A NO.sub.x sensor output parameter is monitored. It is determined that the NO.sub.x sensor output parameter is below a limit. When the NO.sub.x sensor output parameter is below the limit, it is determined that a first part of the exhaust flow should bypass at least a first area of the SCR unit and that a second part of the exhaust flow should be inputted to at least the first area of the SCR unit. It is initiated that the first part is bypassed and that the second part is inputted to at least the first area of the SCR unit. An amount of reductant that should be added to the second part of the exhaust flow is determined. Addition of the amount of reductant is initiated.
