In exemplary embodiments, methods, and systems for multivariable torque control of a vehicle are provided. The method includes configuring a processor disposed of in a multivariable controller to determine a set of references associated with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) by implementing an algorithm based on engine temperature and at least one reference associated with the EGR to generate commands for the control of a set of actuators; Optimizing at least one cam phase position by the control based on a generated command to apply an appropriate level of engine torque for vehicle propulsion; Restricting an allowable range of cam phases associated with operations of an EGR valve for a set of cams based on amounts of humidity and EGR introduced by the EGR valve during an internal combustion phase of vehicle operation; and providing an amount of propulsion torque by an engine in accordance with instructions provided by the processor.
AIR SUPPLY DEVICE FOR AN ELECTRICALLY HEATED CATALYST AND A METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE SAME
An air supply device for an electrically heated catalyst is proposed. The device includes an electronic supercharger fluidly connected to an intake manifold, an intake valve fluidly connected to the electronic supercharger, an exhaust valve fluidly connected to an exhaust manifold of the engine, an electrically heated catalyst fluidly connected to the exhaust manifold and positioned in a front end of a catalyst part, and a controller configured to control driving of the electronic supercharger and an opening degree of each of the intake valve and the exhaust valve. The controller controls the electronic supercharger based on a door opening condition in a cold operation and switches the intake valve to an advance state and the exhaust valve to a retard state, thus heating the electrically heated catalyst.

In a flexible-fuel engine capable of using fuel containing alcohol as fuel to be combusted in a cylinder, the geometric compression ratio is set to 12 or more, the engine is started by using fuel containing alcohol, an intake valve closing timing at an engine start time is set to an advance angle side than a first reference timing being a timing corresponding to a most retarded angle position out of intake valve closing timings capable of starting the engine in combusting fuel of alcohol 100% in the cylinder at a first intake temperature, and is set to a timing on a retarded angle side than a second reference timing being a timing corresponding to a most advanced angle position out of intake valve closing timings capable of avoiding pre-ignition in combusting fuel of gasoline 100% at an engine start time at a second intake temperature.

The locus M is a locus of an in-cylinder pressure changing rate dPc/dθ and is specifically a locus indicating a variation of the in-cylinder pressure changing rate dPc/dθ depending on a crank angle θ.
Port-direct injection engine methods and systems optimizing fuel economy with particulate control
Methods and systems for optimizing fuel economy and maintaining particulate emissions below a threshold of an engine system in a vehicle. An engine system has port fuel injection, direct injection, variable compression ratio, and independent compression/expansion. A processor predicts settings for the four systems that optimize for a fuel economy that is maximized. A particulate rate of the engine system is computed based on the settings. A determination is made of whether the particulate rate is below a threshold. When the particulate rate is below the threshold, command signals are delivered to actuators of the systems to move to the settings. When the threshold is exceeded, the settings are revised to maintain the particulate below the threshold while optimizing for fuel economy.
CONTROLLER AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING OPERATION OF A DIRECT INJECTION INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
Aspects of the present invention relate to a controller (104) and method (400) for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine (101). The controller (104) is configured to: receive a first request signal indicative of a request to stop fuel being supplied to the engine (101), and cause an intake valve (301) of a cylinder (103) of the internal combustion engine (101) to remain closed during the current revolution of the internal combustion engine (101) and revolutions of the internal combustion engine (101) immediately following the current revolution of the internal combustion engine (101) in dependence on at least one of: the intake valve (301) being closed at the time of receiving the first request signal; or a next opening of the intake valve having not been scheduled. The controller (104) is also configured to cause injection of fuel into the cylinder (103) and subsequently cause the intake valve (301) to remain closed during revolutions of the internal combustion engine (101) immediately following a next closing of the intake valve (301), in dependence on at least one of: the intake valve (301) being open at the time of receiving the first request signal; and a next opening of the intake valve (301) having already been scheduled at the time of receiving the first request signal and said next opening of the intake valve (301) is to be performed.
Internal combustion engine system
An internal combustion engine system includes a combustion cylinder provided with a reciprocating piston movable between a top dead center (TDC) and a bottom dead center (BDC) within the combustion cylinder. A first outlet valve is connected to the combustion cylinder for controllably directing exhaust gas from the combustion cylinder to a first exhaust gas manifold of the internal combustion engine system. A second outlet valve is connected to the combustion cylinder for controllably directing exhaust gas from the combustion cylinder to a second exhaust gas manifold of the internal combustion engine system. A turbocharger system includes a turbine and a compressor, wherein the turbine is arranged in fluid communication with the first exhaust gas manifold. An exhaust emission control device is arranged in fluid communication with the second exhaust gas manifold.
