Method for the production of a cast engine block for a combustion engine and engine block

The invention provides a method for easily producing an engine block for a combustion engine. The method includes: a) providing an engine block with an open water jacket opening; b) placing an insert in the water jacket opening; and c) fixing the insert in the water jacket opening by friction welding. The shape of the insert is adapted to the shape of the water jacket opening such that the insert, when being placed, at least partially closes the water jacket opening and bridges the distance between the outer wall and the cylinder wall, thereby supporting the cylinder wall against the outer wall of the engine block. An engine block produced accordingly shows the advantages of a closed deck engine block.

Internal combustion engine system

A system and method are provided for an internal combustion engine. An engine system, in one example, includes a cylinder liner positioned within an opening of a crankcase, including a surface biasing a landing surface of an undercut fillet of the crankcase, and including a cylinder opening and a seal arranged in a groove of the cylinder liner positioned axially above the undercut fillet. The engine system further includes a fluid gasket and a combustion gasket positioned between a cylinder head and the crankcase, the fluid gasket and the combustion gasket being decoupled from one another.

Combustion engine housing having cylinder cooling

A combustion engine housing with cylinder cooling includes at least one cylinder. The cylinder cooling channel has a distribution cross-sectional area having a cross-sectional area through which coolant can flow, in a first cross-sectional plane that is perpendicular to the cylinder axis. In a second cross-sectional plane, which is perpendicular to the cylinder axis and which is arranged in relation to the vertical direction between the first cross-sectional plane and the coolant outflow opening, has a throttle cross-sectional area, which is a cross-sectional area through which coolant can flow. The throttle cross-sectional area is smaller than the distribution cross-sectional area.

A water jacket of a cylinder block includes a main passage and a sub-passage. The main passage is formed along the periphery of a cylinder bank, and extends between a plurality of head bolt bosses and the cylinder bank. The sub-passage is formed at a position spaced from the cylinder bank farther than the main passage, to diverge from the main passage at a first position, and join the main passage at a second position downstream of the first position. A first head bolt boss by which coolant flowing from a coolant inlet initially passes is interposed between the main passage and the sub-passage. The first position is located between the first head bolt boss and the coolant inlet. The second position is located between a second head bolt boss by which the coolant passes next, and the first head bolt boss.

Manufacture of heat transfer jackets

Heat transfer jackets with various passage configurations for cooling or heating equipment. For the equipment of interest, one or more regions of maximum heat transfer are identified. For these regions, the cooling jacket is configured with at least one of the following heat transfer passage geometries: impinging jets, curved blades, columns, dimpled interface, organic, or turbulator. The passage geometries are then manufactured using additive manufacturing.
