Wind farm inertial response

The present invention is concerned with an operation of a wind farm with a plurality of wind turbines in view of a dynamic frequency response. According to the invention, dynamic frequency support and power production for all wind turbines in a wind farm are handled concurrently in a single optimization step and taking into account wake effects within the wind farm as well as optional wind forecast information. The dynamic frequency support capability of the entire wind farm is planned in advance according to grid requirements and power system condition changes. While existing methods de-load wind turbines with a static percentage in order to supply additional power when needed, the proposed method incorporates the dynamic frequency support into the optimal operation system of wind farm.

Dynamic active and reactive power capability for wind farms

A control method for dynamically controlling active and reactive power capability of a wind farm includes obtaining one or more real-time operating parameters of each of the wind turbines. The method also includes obtaining one or more system limits of each of the wind turbines. Further, the method includes measuring at least one real-time wind condition at each of the wind turbines. Moreover, the method includes continuously calculating an overall maximum active power capability and an overall maximum reactive power capability for each of the wind turbines as a function of the real-time operating parameters, the system limits, and/or the real-time wind condition. Further, the method includes generating a generator capability curve for each of the wind turbines using the overall maximum active and reactive power capabilities and communicating the generator capability curves to a farm-level controller of the wind farm that can use the curves to maximize the instantaneous power output of the wind farm.

Systems, methods, and computer program products for providing an inertial response by a wind power system to power fluctuations in an electrical grid. The system includes a synthetic inertial response generator configured to generate a power offset in response to fluctuations in grid voltage. The power offset signal is generated by determining a quadrature component the grid voltage using an internal reference voltage having an angular frequency and phase angle that is synchronized to the electrical grid by a control loop. The quadrature component is used to determine a synchronous power level. A control loop error signal is produced by the difference between the synchronous power level and the wind turbine system power output. Changes in the grid frequency produce an error signal that is added to the power set point of wind turbine system output controllers to provide a power system inertial power output response.

A method for operating a wind farm having a first wind power installation and a second wind power installation, to an associated wind power installation and to an associated wind farm. The second wind power installation is located in the wake of the first wind power installation in at least one wake wind direction. A tip-speed coefficient is determined from the ratio of a second tip-speed ratio of the second wind power installation and a first tip-speed ratio of the first wind power installation and a pitch-angle coefficient is determined from the ratio of a second pitch angle of the second wind power installation and a first pitch angle of the first wind power installation. The method comprises: determining a turbulence metric, in particular a turbulence intensity, at the second wind power installation; operating the first wind power installation and the second wind power installation in the wake wind direction in a part-load range, wherein the tip-speed coefficient and/or the pitch-angle coefficient are/is a function of the turbulence metric at the second wind power installation and are/is greater than one.

Method for estimating a wind speed at a wind turbine

A fast-converging and reliable method for estimating a wind speed at, for example, a wind turbine comprising a rotor carrying a set of variable pitch angle wind turbine blades. The estimated wind speed is iteratively derived using a wind turbine rotor rotational speed, a turbine blade pitch angle, and a derived initial estimated wind speed. The initial estimated wind speed is based on the rotational speed and an initial tip speed ratio. The initial tip speed ratio is selected to be a value greater than a minimum tip speed ratio, wherein the minimum tip speed ratio defines a control region stability limit as a function of the pitch angle. Thus, for a given pitch angle, a minimum tip speed ratio is derived as a limit or boundary point between a stable control region and an unstable control region.
