MORPHABLE ROTOR BLADES AND TURBINE ENGINE SYSTEMS INCLUDING THE SAME
Morphable rotor blades for a turbine engine systems include a root portion and an airfoil portion having a morphable portion including a morphable material that changes shape in response to a stimulus.
Vibration isolation for rotating machines
A rotating machine system can include a rotating machine. The rotating machine system can include a housing. The housing can include an inner surface. The housing can surround at least a portion of the rotating machine. The inner surface of the housing can be spaced from the rotating machine such that a space is defined therebetween. The rotating machine system can include one or more super elastic wires. The one or more super elastic wires can be positioned in the space and can be operatively connected to the rotating machine and the inner surface of the housing. The one or more super elastic wires can reduce vibration within the rotating machine system.
PROPULSION SYSTEM FOR AN AIRCRAFT
A propulsion system for an aircraft includes a rotor and a nacelle fairing that extends around the rotor in relation to an axis. The nacelle fairing includes an upstream portion forming an inlet section of the nacelle fairing as well as a downstream portion, a downstream end of which forms an outlet section of the nacelle fairing. The downstream portion includes radially inner and outer walls, both of which are made of a deformable shape memory material. The wall has independently actuatable piston actuator mechanisms, each actuator mechanism being actuatable independently of the others and being designed to cooperate with means built into an inner surface of the wall to deform the wall in a radial direction in relation to the axis under the effect of a predetermined displacement command.
ARTICLES HAVING THERMALLY CONTROLLED MICROSTRUCTURE AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF
In an embodiment, an article comprises a plurality of structural units, wherein each structural unit comprises a first portion; a second portion; wherein the second portion contacts the first portion; and a third portion; wherein the third portion is in communication with the first portion and the second portion and is more compressible than the first portion and the second portion; wherein the first portion comprises a first shape memory alloy having a first preset state and wherein the second portion comprises a second shape memory alloy that has a second preset state; wherein the second preset state is different from the first preset state.
ARTICLES HAVING THERMALLY CONTROLLED MICROSTRUCTURE AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURE THEREOF
In an embodiment, an article comprises a plurality of structural units, wherein each structural unit comprises a first portion; a second portion; wherein the second portion contacts the first portion; and a third portion; wherein the third portion is in communication with the first portion and the second portion and is more compressible than the first portion and the second portion; where the first portion has a first value of a property and where the second portion has a second value of the same property, such that the first value acts as a restraining or enhancing force on the second value; wherein the first portion comprises a first metal and wherein the second portion comprises a second metal that is different from the first metal.
BLADED DISC
A bladed disc for a rotating machine comprising a central disc that rotates about a central axis, the central disc having a series of blades arranged around its periphery; the blades have dovetail roots which engage with slots on the central disc; the bladed disc being configured so that there is a pre-loading force between the blades and the central disc such that each blade is forced away from the central axis of the bladed disc; and wherein the pre-loading force is equal or greater than 40% of the maximum centrifugal force applied to the blade during a flight cycle.
FLUID PUMP WITH A ROTOR
The invention relates to a fluid pump, in particular to a liquid pump having a rotor with at last one rotor blade for conveying the fluid, the rotor being variable with respect to its diameter between a first, compressed state and a second expanded state. In order to produce a simple compressibility and expandability of the rotor of the pump, it is provided according to the invention that at least one rotor blade is deformable between a first state which it assumes in the compressed state of the rotor and a second state which it assumes in the expanded state of the rotor by means of a fluid counterpressure during a rotation of the rotor during pump operation.
AIR TURBINE STARTER CONTAINMENT SYSTEM
An air turbine starter having a housing, at least one turbine member, and a containment structure. The housing having an interior surface defining an interior. The at least one turbine member rotatably mounted within the interior and having a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades. The containment band having a radially outer surface, a radially inner surface, at least one layer of metal alloy, and at least one layer of shape memory alloy.
Variable stiffness damper system
A variable stiffness damper system including an inner spring positioned between a first wall and a second wall, in which the inner spring includes a first member and a second member each coupled together at a distal end by an inner bumper. The first member and the second member are each contoured toward one another. The first member, the second member, and the inner bumper form a cavity therebetween. An outer spring is positioned between the inner spring and the first wall or the second wall. The outer spring includes a spring arm contoured toward the inner spring. The outer spring includes an outer bumper positioned between the inner bumper and the first wall or the second wall. The inner bumper and the outer bumper are selectively couplable to one another based on a load applied to the damper system.
Airfoil arrangement for a gas turbine engine utilizing a shape memory alloy
An airfoil arrangement for a gas turbine engine may include a support device using a shape memory alloy to support and control the airfoil. The support device may be formed as part of a fan blade. The arrangement may be configured to reduce overall weight and dimensions of the gas turbine engine.
