BONDED SEAL WITH INTEGRAL BACKUP RING

A bonded seal includes a rigid annular carrier having an annular recess therein. An elastomer seal member is bonded within the annular recess. A thermoplastic backup ring is bonded to the elastomer seal member and disposed at an axial end of the annular recess and including elastomer material disposed between at least a portion of an outer diameter surface of the thermoplastic backup ring and the rigid annular carrier.

Seal assembly

A seal assembly and an apparatus including the same are provided. The seal assembly may include a seal member with axially opposing sides and one or two back-up rings for substantially supporting at least one side of the seal member. The seal member may be made of elastomer and have an axially extending base with one or two flange portions and a protrusion extending perpendicularly from the base. The back-up ring may be made of a plastic material and a portion of the back-up ring may abut a radially outer surface of the flange portion of the seal member.

An object is to provide a backup ring manufacturable with an angle of a cut portion set to a standard cut angle even in the case of a product having a small diameter etc. due to dimensional limitation of a device used therewith, and is solved by a sealing device characterized in that a backup ring 1 is disposed in an annular gap 4 formed by disposing a sloped surface 20 on a member surface of one of two members, i.e., a shaft 2 and a housing 3 having a shaft hole in which the shaft 2 is inserted, with a distance from a counterpart member gradually reduced from a high pressure side toward a low pressure side, that the backup ring 1 is in contract with the sloped surface 20 on the low pressure side relative to a mounted seal member 5 made of an annular elastic member, that the backup ring 1 has an axially extending cylindrical portion 10 and a projecting portion 11 continuously disposed on an end portion of the cylindrical portion 10 on the high pressure side and formed to annularly project in a radial direction from the end portion toward the sloped surface 20, and that the projecting portion 11 has a radial tip surface made up of a taper surface 12 facing the sloped surface 20.

O-ring/back-up ring systems that are suitable for use in high pressure applications, including those of 70 MPa automotive hydrogen storage applications, to form a seal between first and second connector bodies. Such sealing systems comprise a back-up ring having a base portion and a flange portion, wherein such ring is configured to prevent extrusion of an O-ring into a gap existing between the back-up ring and a groove into which the back-up ring and O-ring are disposed. High pressure gas storage systems comprising such sealing systems, and methods of sealing a connection in a high pressure hydrogen storage system using such sealing systems.

The back-up ring 20 includes a body part 21, and an annular protruding portion 23 protruding toward a sealed fluid side (A) on a radially outer side of the body part 21. An inner circumferential surface of the body part 21 has a second tapered surface 22 capable of sliding on a first tapered surface 211 formed at the bottom of an annular groove 210, the second tapered surface 22 being capable of sliding within a range of the first tapered surface 211.

A seal assembly for a hydraulic cylinder piston rod includes an annular buffer seal and an annular backup ring. The outer annular seal surface can be spaced farther from the first axial pressure side of the annular buffer seal than the radially inner annular seal surface of the buffer seal such that an annular notch is formed around an inner diameter of the annular buffer seal on the second axial seal side of the annular buffer seal. The annular backup ring can include a radially extending leg portion extending along substantially an entire radial extent of the radially outer annular seal surface of the annular buffer seal, and an axially extending leg portion extending axially into the annular notch formed around the inner diameter of the annular buffer seal on the second axial seal side of the annular buffer seal.
