When the gas burner appliance (10) becomes started running the fan (14) at a defined fan speed, increasing the opening of the gas flow modulator (18) while activating the ignition device (27) trying to ignite the gas/air mixture until the activation of ignition device results into a combustion of the gas/air mixture. Determining from the fan speed of the fan (14) and from the measured ambient air pressure an air volume flow. Measuring the gas pressure by the sensor (21) when the safety valve unit (19) is opened, the gas flow modulator (18) is opened and the fan (14) is running. Determining from the opening of the gas flow modulator (18) at which the combustion started and from the measured gas pressure a gas volume flow. Determining a ratio between the gas volume flow and the air volume and from said ratio the gas family of the combusted gas.

Exemplary embodiments of a system and method for bimodal air control in a kettle-style grill are configured to be detachably mounted to the exterior of a kettle-styled grill such as, but not limited to, a Weber charcoal grill. When mounted to the kettle-styled grill, a plenum-like component directs air flows to the interior of the grill's kettle via the kettle's lower body damper holes. A manually adjustable intake damper in the plenum component allows, restricts, or prevents a drawn ambient air flow into the plenum component. Separately, a forced air flow generated by a fan may also be provided into the plenum component. Adjustment of the intake damper may also adjust damper blades inside the grill's kettle. Ash that falls out of the kettle's damper holes falls through the plenum component and is captured in an ash receptacle that is removably mounted to the plenum component.

A furnace may include a sensor, such as a transducer, that may be used to measure pressure within the furnace (for example, pressure resulting from the operation of a draft inducer blower and/or any other component of the furnace). It is possible that the data produced by the sensor may remain relatively fixed for a given period of time. However, this makes it difficult to determine if the data is valid or if the sensor is malfunctioning. Given this, an algorithm is used to change a motor speed of the inducer blower. The subsequent data that is produced by the sensor is then monitored to determine if an expected change in the data occurs. If the change does not occur, then it may be determined that the sensor is malfunctioning.

The described systems can dynamically accommodate differences in air quality and gas fuel supply to provide an optimum BTU output irrespective of differences in geographic location of usage. The gas furnace can include a dynamic response unit which predicts an optimum rate of heating to maintain a target room temperature, thereby preventing unnecessary shut down and costly re-ignition sequences, and maintaining the gas furnace at an optimum BTU output level.

For example, a combustion device may include: a burner; a side duct; and a feed duct. The side duct may include a mass flow sensor and a flow resistance element. The mass flow sensor detects a mass flow through the side duct. The flow resistance element subdivides the side duct. A connector of the feed duct comprises a Pitot probe. A first section of the Pitot probe projects into the feed duct and a sub area facing towards the outlet of the feed duct of the first section of the Pitot probe comprises the inlet of the Pitot probe.

The method also includes providing a notification related to a combustion system of the water heater system based on at least the deviation of the duration of the pre-purge operation from the pre-purge duration average value, the deviation of the flame current from the flame current average value, and the deviation of the PWM parameter from the PWM parameter average value.
