Heat-activated triggering device with bi-metal triggering element

A heat-activated triggering device, such as for a missile or munition, includes a bi-metal trigger element, with a breakable pin of a first metal surrounded by a sleeve made of a second metal that is different than the first metal. The sleeve may be made of a shape memory alloy, such as a single-crystal shape memory alloy, that is pre-compresses around part of the pin. The sleeve may be configured to put a tension force on the pin as the sleeve passes a predetermined temperature, for instance a temperature at which the shape memory feature of the sleeve is activated. The pin may have a weakened portion, such as a notched portion, at which the pin breaks. The breaking of the pin may be used to drive a firing pin into a primer, to initiate a detonation and/or combustion reaction.

The actuator can also include a casing including a base portion being fixed to the actuator body near the ignition device, and being disposed in a space inside the actuator body covering the ignition device. The casing can define a second space between the casing and the partition wall member of the ignition device, and seal, inside the second space, a combustion product generated by combustion of the gunpowder by the ignition device. When pressure inside the second space arises due to combustion of the gunpowder, a portion of the casing can stretch to approach a predetermined end portion of the output piston portion.

An initiation system that includes a housing, an exploding foil initiator and a securing structure. The housing is formed of plastic and defines a cavity with an open end. The exploding foil initiator assembly has an initiator chip, a flyer layer and a barrel. The initiator chip has an electrically conductive bridge and is at least partly encapsulated in the plastic of the housing. The flyer layer has a first side, which faces the bridge, and a second side opposite the first side. The barrel is disposed between the second side of the flyer layer and an end of the cavity opposite the open end. The securing structure is formed of metal and is partly encapsulated in the plastic of the housing. The securing structure is disposed about the cavity and extends away from the housing about a perimeter of the open end of the cavity.

The weak zone extends along a continuous trace having a first end portion, a second end portion, and an intermediate portion between the first and second end portions. Exploding foil initiator apparatus, system, and method that improve the current density in the bridge region by modifying the shape and dimensions of the bridge and related components. The exploding foil initiator reduces burn-back by making areas of the bridge thicker except directly under the flyer. The exploding foil initiator boards are built so the flyer is not connected to the rest of the top cover-lay. This avoids losing energy due to the flyer having to tear away from the solid cover-lay.
