THROUGH THICKNESS REINFORCEMENT
A method for making a ceramic matrix composite component includes densifying a fibrous preform of the component with a ceramic matrix to form an intermediate component; infiltrating a hole in the intermediate component with an infiltrate material comprising a solid and a metallic alloy whose reaction forms a carbide, silicide, boride or combination thereof, heating the infiltrate material to a temperature in excess of a melting point of the metallic alloy; and sequentially cooling regions of the hole starting from an interior end of the hole to the outer surface of the intermediate component to form a solidified through-thickness reinforcement element. The hole extends in a through-thickness direction and is open to an exterior surface of the intermediate component.
HYBRID PLATFORM MANUFACTURING
A method of assembling a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) component is provided. The method includes assessing which portions of the CMC component require relatively high-temperature capability and which portions require at least one of strength, thickness and increased thermal conductivity, making the portions that require the relatively high temperature capability with chemical vapor infiltration (CVI), making the portions that require the at least one of strength, thickness and increased thermal conductivity with melt infiltration (MI) and combining the portions that require the relatively high temperature capability with the CVI and the portions that require the at least one of strength, thickness and increased thermal conductivity with the MI.
Ceramic matrix composite vane assembly with compliance features
A vane assembly includes a vane that includes an outer platform, an inner platform, and an airfoil. The outer platform defines an outer boundary of a gas path. The inner platform is spaced apart radially from the outer platform relative to an axis and defines an inner boundary of the gas path. The airfoil extends radially between and interconnects the outer platform and the inner platform.
TEMPERATURE BARRIER COATING FOR RIM-ROTOR
A rim-rotor assembly has an annular structure including a composite rim and a hub. Blades project from the hub, tips of the blades contacting the annular structure, the blades configured to be loaded in compression against the annular structure. A thermal barrier is in the annular structure, the thermal barrier defining at least part of a radially inward surface of the annular structure. The tips of the blades contact the thermal barrier, the thermal barrier being a thermal barrier coating.
SUSPENSION PLASMA SPRAY COMPOSITION AND PROCESS FOR DEPOSITION OF RARE EARTH HAFNIUM TANTALATE BASED COATINGS
Methods for forming a coating on a surface of a substrate are provided. The method can include: preheating the surface of the substrate; spraying a slurry suspension onto the surface of the substrate to form a coating, wherein the slurry composition comprises a rare earth compound, a sintering agent, and a solvent, wherein the rare earth compound has the formula: A.sub.1-bB.sub.bZ.sub.1-dD.sub.dMO.sub.6 where A is Al, Ga, In, Sc, Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Fe, Cr, Co, Mn, Bi, or a mixture thereof; b is 0 to 0.5; Z is Hf, Ti, or a mixture thereof; D is Zr, Ce, Ge, Si, or a mixture thereof; d is 0 to 0.5; and M is Ta, Nb, or a mixture thereof; and thereafter, heat treating the coating to densify the coating from an initial porosity to a sintered porosity.
CMAS-resistant protective layer
The present invention relates to a protective layer against CMAS, to a CMAS-resistant article comprising the protective layer according to the invention, and to a process for preparing a corresponding article.
Airfoil vane with coated jumper tube
An airfoil vane includes an outer ceramic wall that defines an airfoil section and a cavity that extends through the airfoil section. A jumper tube is disposed in the cavity for transferring cooling air. The jumper tube includes a wall, a through-passage circumscribed by the wall, and a thermal barrier coating disposed on the wall.
Part comprising a substrate and an environmental barrier
A part includes a substrate having, adjacent to a surface of the substrate, at least a portion that is made of a material that contains silicon, and an environmental barrier formed on the surface of the substrate, the environmental barrier including a first layer including at least one first rare earth silicate and presenting grains with a mean size less than or equal to 1 μm; and a second layer covering the first layer, the second layer including at least one rare earth silicate and presenting grains with a mean size greater than 1 μm.
Multilayer abradable coatings for high-performance systems
An example high-performance system includes an example high-performance component including a substrate and a multilayer abradable track adjacent to the substrate. The abradable track includes a plurality of alternating layers along a thickness of the abradable track. The plurality of alternating layers includes at least one relatively porous abradable layer and at least one relatively dense layer. A porosity of the relatively dense layer is lower than that of the at least one relatively porous abradable layer. The example high-performance system may include a rotating component configured to contact and abrade the multilayer abradable track. An example technique for forming the multilayer abradable track includes thermal spraying a first precursor composition toward the substrate to form a relatively porous abradable layer of a layer pair of a plurality of layer pairs of the multilayer abradable track, and a second precursor composition to form a relatively dense layer of the pair.
