Method of operating an engine having a pilot subchamber at partial load conditions

A method of operating an internal combustion engine having pilot subchambers communicating with main combustion chambers, the internal combustion engine configured in use to deliver a main fuel injection of a maximum quantity of fuel to the main combustion chambers when the internal combustion engine is operated at maximum load. The method includes delivering a pilot fuel injection of at most 10% of the maximum quantity to the pilot subchambers, igniting the pilot fuel injection within the pilot subchambers, directing the ignited fuel from the pilot subchambers to the main combustion chambers, and delivering a main fuel injection of a main quantity of fuel to at least one of the main combustion chambers receiving the ignited fuel, with the main quantity being at most 10% of the maximum quantity.

A pre-chamber component for an internal combustion engine includes a chamber for accommodating an air-fuel-mixture to be ignited, wherein the pre-chamber component includes a first opening into the chamber for arranging an ignition device, in particular a spark plug, and a second opening for introducing the air-fuel-mixture in the form of a mixture flow into the chamber. The pre-chamber component includes a mixture flow guiding device, which is shaped such that the mixture flow of the air-fuel-mixture in the chamber is oriented substantially transversely with respect to a longitudinal axis from the second opening of the chamber to at least a part of the chamber adjacent to the first opening and/or in the form of a turbulent flow.

In one example embodiment, the cylinder head includes at least one spark plug having at least one earth electrode, a precombustion chamber accommodating the at least one spark plug, and a fuel channel which leads into the precombustion chamber. The fuel channel having a flow axis at an outlet that is oriented in the direction of the at least one earth electrode. An axis of rotation of the at least one spark plug has an offset with respect to the flow axis between 0 and 15% of the greatest precombustion chamber diameter.

A spark-ignited reciprocating piston internal combustion engine includes a pre-chamber ignition system with a housing which is installed in a cylinder head of the spark-ignited reciprocating piston internal combustion engine. An ignition apparatus is disposed in the pre-chamber ignition system and the ignition apparatus protrudes into a cavity in the housing. The cavity is covered by a cover with respect to a combustion chamber of the spark-ignited reciprocating piston internal combustion engine and the cover has at least one aperture which connects the cavity and the combustion chamber to one another in a gas-conducting manner. The housing has a volume and the at least one aperture has a jet cross section and a ratio of the volume to the jet cross section is greater than 100 and less than 300.
