SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR INTAKE MANIFOLD PRESSURE CONTROL
Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves are presented. In one example, engine volumetric efficiency actuators are adjusted in response to a request to activate engine cylinders so that engine intake manifold pressure is drawn down quickly toward its normal state at the engine's present speed and torque.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ADJUSTING INTAKE MANIFOLD PRESSURE
Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves are presented. In one example, a position of an engine air intake throttle is adjusted during cylinder deactivation to control intake manifold pressure for cylinder reactivation. Closing of the throttle may be timed based on an actual total number of cylinder induction events expected to provide a desired engine intake manifold pressure.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR MITIGATING CYLINDER DEACTIVATION DEGRADATION
Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves are presented. In one example, valves of a cylinder are deactivated in a closed state in response to an indication of degradation of a valve of the cylinder. Further, fuel flow to the cylinder may be stopped via ceasing to inject fuel to the cylinder.
SYSTEM FOR METHOD FOR CONTROLLING ENGINE KNOCK OF A VARIABLE DISPLACEMENT ENGINE
Systems and methods for detecting and controlling knock in an engine are presented. In one example, engine knock sensors are selected based on whether or not certain cylinders are activated and combusting air and fuel or deactivated and not combusting air and fuel. Output of selected knock sensors is the basis for adjusting engine spark timing.
SYSTEM FOR DEACTIVATING ENGINE CYLINDERS
Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves is presented. In one example, the engine may include non-deactivating intake valves, deactivating intake valves, and only non-deactivating exhaust valves. The non-deactivating exhaust valves may operate to open and close during an engine cycle while deactivating intake valves remain closed during the engine cycle to prevent air flow through selected engine cylinders.
On board diagnostic method for electromagnetic latch assembly
A method of providing diagnostic information for an electromagnetic latch assembly (122) includes providing a pulse to a circuit (200) that include one or more electromagnetic latch assemblies. The circuit (200) includes coils (199) of the electromagnetic latch assemblies. Each coil is inductively coupled with an armature (131) that is mechanically coupled to a latch pin (118). The circuit (200) is pulsed and a DC current in the circuit (200) that results from the pulse is measured over a first interval to determine a primary response. The current in the circuit (200) over a second interval is measured to determine a reference response. A second pulse may be used to generate the current for the reference response. The primary response and the reference response are compared to provide diagnostic information relating to position or movement of one or more of the latch pins (118).
Separately determining firing density and pumping density during firing density transitions for a lean-burn internal combustion engine
A skip fire engine controller and method of control is described wherein during transitions from a first firing density to a second firing density, a firing density and a pumping density are separately set so as to balance the conflicting demands of (a) torque control, (b) Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH), (c) air flow through the engine and (d) air-fuel ratio.
TORQUE ESTIMATION IN A SKIP FIRE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM
In one aspect, a method is described. An operational engine torque is calculated. The engine is operated in a skip fire manner to deliver the operational engine torque. A reference engine torque is calculated using a torque model. The torque model involves estimating torque at a working chamber level. The reference engine torque is compared to the calculated operational engine torque to assess the accuracy of the operational engine torque calculation. Various embodiments of the present invention involve software, devices, systems and engine controllers that are related to one or more of the above operations.
Method and system for improving turbocharger efficiency
Methods and systems are provided for enhancing turbocharger performance for a boosted engine system configured to operate with a pattern of deactivated cylinders. In one example, a method may include, in response to a demand for boost, operating with a cylinder pattern based on boost demand and turbocharger configuration. The specific pattern may depend on the pattern constraints imposed by engine load and NVH metrics.
ENGINE TORQUE SMOOTHING
Methods, devices, estimators, controllers and algorithms are described for estimating the torque profile of an engine and/or for controlling torque applied to a powertrain by one or more devices other than the engine itself to manage the net torque applied by the engine and other device(s) in manners that reduce undesirable NVH. The described approaches are particularly well suitable for use in hybrid vehicles in which the engine is operated in a skip fire or other dynamic firing level modulation manner—however they may be used in a variety of other circumstances as well. In some embodiments, the hybrid vehicle includes a motor/generator that applies the smoothing torque.
