Engine operating method and engine system for improved load step acceptance

Operating an engine system includes feeding a flow of exhaust to a turbine in a turbocharger, receiving a load step request, and increasing a speed of rotation of the turbocharger based on an increase in a fueling rate initiated in response to the load step request. Operating the engine system further includes limiting dissipation of heat energy of the flow of exhaust to the turbine to hasten an increase in the speed of rotation of the turbocharger, and increasing dissipation of heat energy from the flow of exhaust after satisfaction of the load step request. Varying of the dissipation of heat energy can be achieved by displacing an insulating fluid in the exhaust manifold with a heat exchange fluid such as water and/or engine coolant.

Intake apparatus for an engine that includes an injector for injecting fuel into a flowstream of intake gas through the apparatus and a heater for heating intake gas passing through the apparatus. The apparatus being operable to inject fuel into the flowstream of intake gas by means of the injector such that when intake gas flows through the apparatus at a first flow rate injected fuel impinges on the heater; and when intake gas flows through the apparatus at a second flow rate greater than the first a flowpath of injected fuel is deflected by intake gas such that substantially no fuel impinges on the heater.

ENGINE

An engine (21) including a cylinder internal pressure sensor (63), a torque sensor (64), and an engine control device (73). The cylinder internal pressure sensor (63) detects a cylinder internal pressure. The torque sensor (64) detects an engine load. The engine control device (73) receives a detection result of the cylinder internal pressure sensor (63) and a detection result of the torque sensor (64). If the load detected by the torque sensor (64) is zero (no load) and the cylinder internal pressure obtained from the detection result of the cylinder internal pressure sensor (63) is greater than or equal to a threshold, the engine control device (73) determines that an abnormality occurs in detection by the torque sensor (64).

Injector arrangement structure

An injector arrangement structure includes an air cleaner which is arranged at a rear side of an engine for a vehicle, a rear suspension which extends vertically at the rear side of the engine, and a first injector which is attached to the air cleaner. The air cleaner includes an outlet tube configuring a clean side of the air cleaner. The rear suspension and the outlet tube overlap each other in a side view. A partition wall dividing an intake passage vertically is provided inside the outlet tube. The first injector is attached from a lower side of the outlet tube so as to inject fuel toward the partition wall.

MULTI-PHYSICS FLUID ATOMIZER AND METHODS

A fluid mixing device that includes a housing having a fuel inlet and at least one primary orifice positioned at the inlet, wherein the at least one orifice configured to disperse a stream of fuel into a plurality of fuel droplets. The plurality of fuel droplets contact a fuel impingement surface to break up the plurality of fuel droplets into a plurality of smaller secondary droplets and create a thin film of secondary droplets on the impingement surface. At least one pressurized air channel delivers an airflow into contact with the secondary droplets. The secondary droplets pass through a plurality of secondary outlet orifices to exit the housing. A size of the plurality of secondary droplets is reduced when passing out of the plurality of secondary orifices.
