Rotor assembly for turbomachine having electric motor with solitary solid core permanent magnet
A rotor assembly for a turbomachine having a permanent magnet electric motor that defines an axis of rotation includes a jacket member. The rotor assembly also includes a magnet member that is received within the jacket member. The magnet member has a first longitudinal end and a second longitudinal end that are separated along the axis of rotation. The rotor assembly also includes a first shaft structure that is attached to the first longitudinal end and a second shaft structure that is attached to the second longitudinal end. The magnet member is solitary and unitary and has a solid core.
High and low spool accessory gearbox drive
A gas turbine engine comprises a low speed spool and a high speed spool, with each of the spools including a turbine to drive a respective one of the spools. The high speed spool rotates at a higher speed than the low speed spool. A high speed power takeoff is driven to rotate by the high speed spool, and a low speed power takeoff is driven to rotate by the low speed spool. The high speed power takeoff drives a starter generator and a permanent magnet alternator. The low speed power takeoff drives a variable frequency generator.
GAS TURBINE ENGINE MOTORING SYSTEM FOR BOWED ROTOR ENGINE STARTS
A system for a gas turbine engine is provided. The system comprising: a gas turbine engine including rotational components comprising an engine compressor, an engine turbine, and a rotor shaft operably connecting the engine turbine to the engine compressor, wherein each rotational component is configured to rotate when any one of the rotational components is rotated; a permanent magnet alternator operably connected to at least one of the rotational components, the permanent magnet alternator being configured to rotate the rotational components; and a motor controller in electronic communication with the permanent magnet alternator, the motor controller being configured to command the permanent magnet alternator to rotate the rotational components at a selected angular velocity for a selected period of time.
EMBEDDED ELECTRIC MACHINE
A gas turbine engine includes a compressor section and a turbine section together defining a core air flowpath. Additionally, a rotary component is rotatable with at least a portion of the compressor section and at least a portion of the turbine section. An electric machine is mounted coaxially with the rotary component and positioned at least partially inward of the core air flowpath along a radial direction of the gas turbine engine. A cavity wall defines at least in part a buffer cavity surrounding at least a portion of the electric machine to thermally insulate the electric machine, e.g., from the relatively high temperatures within the core air flowpath.
EPICYCLIC GEARTRAIN
An epicyclic geartrain comprises a sun gear, a plurality of planet gears, and a ring gear. The plurality of planet gears is supported by a planet torque ring. The planet gears meshingly surround the sun gear, and the ring gear meshingly surrounds the planet gears. At least one of the sun gear, the plurality of planet gears, and the ring gear, is provided with a plurality of permanent magnet portions. Each of the plurality of magnet portions is arranged as a circumferential array. The planet torque ring is provided with at least one stator coil array, with the or each stator coil array being positioned in axial alignment with the or each corresponding plurality of permanent magnet portions as an axial flux electric motor generator element.
