A thermally-conductive planar surface is provided to the dielectric material of the substrate to be placed in thermal communication with the heat transfer surface and conduct heat generated by the light emitting diodes to the body.

A dual output headlight system includes a projection system having a laser light source to emit incoherent light. The projection system also has a partitioned display surface including a headlight display section and a selectively active augmented display section. A light source is provided with extended persistence and reduced flicker characteristics by using a light capacitive filter. In general, a light source can include an illumination source which converts electrical energy into emitted light. The illumination source, however, is generally powered by an AC waveform, and the periodic variations inherent in the AC waveform may cause flicker in the emitted light. To reduce the flicker, a light capacitive filter is included in the light source to filter the light emitted by the illumination source and produce a light output with reduced flicker. In some examples, the light capacitive filter includes a medium persistence phosphor having a decay constant (or half-life) of between 1 milliseconds and 2 seconds.

The wavelength converting element comprises a luminescent element (104) and a light transmitting cooling support (112). The sealing envelope has a first thermal conductivity. The cooling support has a second thermal conductivity that is at least two times the first thermal conductivity. The cooling support comprises a first surface (113) and the sealing envelope comprises a second surface (105). The first surface and the second surface face towards each other. The first surface is thermally coupled to the second surface for allowing through the second surface a conduction of heat towards the cooling support to enable a redistribution of the heat generated in the luminescent element.

A light source causes hollow objects to glow in the dark (GID), thereby extending the operating period of light-activated materials in gazing globes and other decorative or ornamental objects. The light source may be provided as part of a conversion kit, enabling objects from different manufacturers to be converted to GID objects following purchase. A base unit includes the light emitter supported to illuminate the object from the inside out. The base unit further includes at least one solar panel facing into the interior of the object, and one or more batteries charged by the solar panel to power the light emitter. A device is used to couple the base unit to the rim of the object. In the preferred embodiment, the device for coupling the base unit to the rim of the object is an elastomeric ring that stretches over the rim of the object, thereby forming a seal.
