Flechette for direct fire weapons

A flechette for use with a gun barrel having a tapered bore with a diameter at the initial bore section greater than the diameter at the emergent bore. The flechette includes a body constructed of a ductile material and having an elongated axis aligned with the axis of the tapered bore when positioned in the load end of the bore. The body also includes a cylindrical bulkhead as well as a bourrelet that are axially spaced from each other along the flechette and have an outside diameter substantially the same as the diameter at the initial bore section of the tapered bore. An elongated boom is attached at the tail end of the body while a penetrator is attached at the forward end of the body. Upon launch, both the bulkhead and bourrelet are compressed radially inward by the bore reduction so that the body is substantially cylindrical upon exit from the discharge end of the bore.

NANOCRYSTALLINE ALLOY PENETRATORS

Nanocrystalline alloy penetrators and related methods are generally provided. In some embodiments, a munition comprises a nanocrystalline alloy penetrator. In certain embodiments, the nanocrystalline alloy has particular properties (e.g., grain size, grain isotropy, mechanical properties) such that the penetrator acts as a rigid body kinetic penetrator.

Projectile with insert

A bullet (10) including: body (11) with a base (12), a distal end (13) with a mouth (14), and an interior cavity (34) recessed into the body from the mouth; an insert (40) configured to be held in the interior cavity and to protrude from the mouth; and at least one skive (50) formed in the distal end and axially overlapping the interior cavity relative to a center axis (16) of the body. The interior cavity is configured to permit limited axial recession of the insert into the interior cavity when the insert impacts a hard target. The limited axial recession opens a pocket (80) between the insert and the mouth.

Method of modifying ammunition classification

A method is disclosed for modifying pre-existing ammunition projectile (10) which includes a hard metal inner core (11). The projectile is secured and a drill is applied to the tip end (17) of the projectile so as to create a bore (20) extending into the core. An insert (22) is then coupled to the projectile. The insert may include a shaft portion (23) which extends into the core channel and a tip portion (25). The insert is made of a non-hard metal or soft material.

Cartridge with igniter cords

The invention relates to a cartridge having a projectile secured to a case that contains a propelling charge and closed by a base. A device for igniting the propelling charge has at least two energetic igniter cords that extend between an initiating means secured to a rear part of the case and the projectile. In this cartridge, the cords are joined at their rear part so as to form a strand, and they are fastened by at least one fastening means secured to the cartridge, the strand being connected to the initiating means by a packing gland making it possible to immobilize the cords both radially and axially relative to the initiating means while keeping the cords tight between their fastening means and the initiating means.

The invention relates to a Pb-free deforming/partially fragmenting projectile with a projectile body. In order to improve the killing effect of the projectile, the projectile has a fragmenting core according to the invention. The projectile body is equipped with a bore which is arranged on the longitudinal axis, extends from the tip of the projectile body, and extends into the interior, and the projectile body tip, which faces away from the projectile base has a bevel which extends from the outer circumference of the projectile body to the bore and runs at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis. The fragmenting core has a cylindrical part and a head part. The cylindrical part is arranged in the bore, and the head part protrudes out of the bore and has a support surface which is adapted to the bevel in the projectile body and together with the support surface rests on the bevel of the projectile body. The head part has a rounded tip which forms the tip of the projectile.

Projectile, in particular in the medium caliber range

A projectile having a projectile body for holding a penetrator, a projectile rear, and a projectile ogive. The projectile body has a narrowed point, on which the penetrator can be supported. The narrowed point results in reliable breaking open of the projectile body when the projectile hits a target.
