METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING COMPRESSED NITROGEN AND LIQUID NITROGEN BY CRYOGENIC SEPARATION OF AIR
20180017322 · 2018-01-18 ·

A method and apparatus for producing compressed nitrogen and liquid nitrogen. A separation system has a high-pressure column, a low-pressure column with a top condenser and a main condenser. Air is compressed in an air compressor, purified, cooled in a heat exchanger and introduced into the high-pressure column. A first part of the gaseous top nitrogen from the low-pressure column becomes compressed nitrogen product. A second part of the gaseous top nitrogen is condensed in the condensing space of the top condenser and vapour is drawn off as a residual gas stream. The vapor is expanded in a first expansion machine. A second compressed nitrogen stream from the top of the high-pressure column is expanded in a second expansion machine and then drawn off as compressed nitrogen product. A part of the nitrogen condensed in the top condenser is drawn off as liquid nitrogen product.

An air product is produced in an air separation plant having a heat exchanger, an expansion/compression unit, a rectification unit, liquid storage, cold storage and an air compressor. The air supplied to the rectification unit is conducted through the main air compressor at a pressure level at least 3 bar above the highest operation pressure for the rectification unit. Cryogenic liquids are produced in a first production amount by a first operating mode, a lower second production amount by a second operating mode and a higher third production amount by a third operating mode. Cryogenic liquid is stored in the liquid storage in the third operating mode and removed from storage in the second operating mode. Cryogenic liquid is evaporated in different amounts in each operating mode, which amounts differ by no more than 10%.

LIQUID NITROGEN GENERATOR AND PROCESS

A process for producing liquid nitrogen utilizes a distillation system comprising higher-pressure and lower-pressure columns, a first condenser in the lower-pressure column bottom, and a second condenser disposed on top of the lower-pressure column. Feed air is compressed in a main air compressor above 15 bar(a) and cooled in a main heat exchanger. A first cooled air portion is expanded in a cold turbine before separation in the higher-pressure column. A second cooled air portion is liquefied before entering the higher-pressure column. Liquid nitrogen streams condensed by both the first and second condensers are combined to yield the final product. Another feature involves warming and expanding a lost air stream (e.g., from the cold turbine outlet and/or higher-pressure column) to below 2 bar(a) in a warm turbine.
