An engine controller executes a fuel introduction process of introducing, in a state in which the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine is rotating, air-fuel mixture that contains fuel injected by a fuel injection valve into the exhaust passage without burning the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. When the oxygen concentration of exit gas that has passed through a three-way catalyst decreases during the execution of the fuel introduction process, the engine controller executes a stopping process of stopping the fuel introduction process.

A heavy duty truck includes a diesel engine, an exhaust after-treatment system, and an engine control unit. The exhaust after-treatment system may include one or more selective catalytic reduction systems, each with a respective heater, and each heater with a respective pair of temperature sensors, one upstream and the other downstream of the heater. Such systems may be used to perform diagnostic methods including populating a lookup table having heat energy supplied to an exhaust gas stream by the diesel engine as a first independent variable, heat energy supplied to the exhaust gas stream by a heater as a second independent variable, and a resulting temperature as an output. Such a lookup table can be used to maintain a temperature of the exhaust gas flow at a constant target temperature.
Method of Controlling Operation of an Exhaust Gas Treatment Apparatus
A method is disclosed for controlling an engine assembly comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust gas treatment apparatus. The aftertreatment assembly may require cleaning from time to time, and where this involves active thermal management of the aftertreatment assembly, the method involves performing the following steps: (a) imposing a first limit on engine speed; (b) awaiting an engine safe state; and (c) implementing a cleaning process comprising: (i) injecting fuel into the engine such that the fuel passes through the engine without combusting for the fuel to combust in the diesel oxidation catalyst so as to target an increase in exhaust gas temperature in the diesel oxidation catalyst; and (ii) removing the first limit on engine speed and targeting an engine speed set point, wherein the engine speed set point is at a higher speed than the first limit on engine speed.

An exhaust emission control device has at least one exhaust gas line, at least one particulate filter and/or at least one exhaust gas catalytic converter connected to the exhaust gas line, and a heated catalyst assembly arranged upstream of the particulate filter and/or the exhaust gas catalytic converter. The heated catalyst assembly is designed to react fuel with exhaust gas, and has a housing provided with an inlet and an outlet connected to the exhaust gas line such that a partial flow of the exhaust gas flowing in the exhaust gas line can be fed through the inlet into the housing and can be discharged from the housing through the outlet back into the exhaust gas line downstream of the inlet. An exhaust emission control device of this type may be used in conjunction with an internal combustion engine, and may be used for emission control of exhaust gas.

The exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine is heatable by a combustor at a point disposed upstream of the SCR catalytic converter and downstream of the particulate filter where the combustor provides an exhaust gas of the combustor. Particles are filterable out from the exhaust gas of the combustor by a filter element.

A method is disclosed to control an exhaust gas after-treatment system with at least one catalytic converter arranged along an exhaust duct and a burner, which is suited to introduce exhaust gases into the exhaust duct, wherein inside the burner there is defined a combustion chamber, which receives fresh air through an air feeding circuit and fuel from an injector; the method comprises housing a temperature and pressure sensor interposed between a pumping device and the burner or leaving the burner; acquiring the pressure signal generated by the combustion inside the combustion chamber and detected by said temperature and pressure sensor; and controlling the combustion inside the combustion chamber as a function of said pressure signal.
Controller and control method for internal combustion engine
A controller executes a fuel introduction process when stopping combustion in a cylinder under a situation in which a crankshaft is rotating. The fuel introduction process causes a fuel injection valve to inject fuel and causes the fuel to flow out unburned from inside the cylinder to an exhaust passage. The opening degree of an exhaust gas recirculation valve at a point in time when a state in which the execution condition of the fuel introduction process is not satisfied is switched to a state in which the execution condition of the fuel introduction process is satisfied is a preliminary opening degree. During the execution of the fuel introduction process, the recirculation valve controlling section causes the opening degree of the exhaust gas recirculation valve to be smaller than the preliminary opening degree.
