A railroad crossing safety assembly includes a plurality of object sensors that is each positioned on a respective one of four corners of a railroad crossing. The object sensors emit a sensing signal across the railroad crossing to detect an obstruction on the railroad crossing. A data storage unit is provided and each of the object sensors is in electrical communication with the data storage unit. The data storage unit is in electrical communication with emergency responders thereby facilitating the emergency responders to be notified of the obstruction on the railroad crossing. Additionally, the data storage unit is in communication with a railway operation department thereby facilitating the railway operation department to alter railway scheduling in response to the obstruction.

The TMS dynamically receives first data comprising image data and/or audio data of the target objects in the region and second data comprising circumstantial information related to the first data from one or more sensors positioned in one or more spatial directions in the region over a network. The TMS filters the dynamically received first data and identifies the target objects in the region using image data extracted from the filtered data. The TMS generates descriptive parameters associated with each identified target object in the region using the filtered first data and the circumstantial information.

Described herein is a method and system of distributed acoustic sensing, such as in an urban or metropolitan area involving a dedicated and established fibre optic communications network including a data centre. In general, the disclosed method and system includes the steps of (a) selecting an optical fibre cable installation having a path extending across a selected geographical area, the optical fibre cable installation including a bundle of optical fibres and forming part of a fibre-optic communications network, (b) determining characteristics associated with the optical fibre and/or the selected optical fibre installation, (c) transmitting outgoing light in the optical fibre, (d) receiving reflected light back scattered along the optical fibre, and (e) based on the reflected light and the determined characteristics, generating an alert signal representative of an acoustic event. The disclosed method and system is thereby configured to detect acoustic events near or within the selected geographical area.
