Method and device for reading, writing, and communication by deafblind users
A method and device for reading, writing, and communication by deafblind users is provided to enable such exemplary functions as word processing, text messaging, Internet access, and telephonic communication. By combining a chordic keyboard for user input with a self-scrolling Braille pad for reading Braille, embodiments of the invention enable the user's hands to stay in place on a user console rather than having to constantly switch back and forth between typing messages versus reading or checking for messages. This in turn enables duplex communication because the user can read or acknowledge incoming messages even while typing. It also reduces the dynamic complexity experienced in reading Braille because a body part used for reading Braille can remain constantly available for receiving messages simply by resting in place on the self-scrolling Braille pad without any swiping, thereby eliminating swiping gestures and the problem of timing them with the receipt of messages.

Haptic communication system using broad-band stimuli
A haptic communication system includes a broadband signal generator to extract parameters from sensor signals describing a message for transmission to a user. Broadband carrier signals are generated by aggregating a plurality of frequency components. Actuator signals are generated by encoding the parameters from the sensor signals into the broadband carrier signals. One or more cutaneous actuators are communicatively coupled to the broadband signal generator to receive the actuator signals. Haptic vibrations are generated corresponding to the actuator signals on a body of the user to communicate the message to the user.

Systems and methods for providing communication services
Systems for providing network-based communication services are provided, such systems comprising a platform configured to facilitate interaction between users requesting interpretation services and individuals capable of fulfilling such requests. Both the content submitted through the system for interpretation and the resulting interpretation may be prerecorded, which facilitates the accuracy of the end-product. Methods for facilitating communication services over a network are also provided, such methods comprising the steps of receiving a request for interpretation, receiving acceptance of the request from an interpreter, receiving a response that corresponds with an interpretation of the content, and making the response available to one or more users via a server.

Haptic communication using inside body illusions
Embodiments relate to operating multiple cutaneous actuators to provide the sensation of motions or actions occurring within the body. A part of receiving user's body (e.g., limb or head) is placed between the cutaneous actuators. The cutaneous actuators are operated in sequence, causing the illusion of motions or actions occurring inside the body part, as opposed to patches of skin where the cutaneous actuators are located. By differing the time interval between the activation of the cutaneous actuators and/or amplitude of vibrations generated by the cutaneous actuators.

Method and system for providing adjunct sensory information to a user
A method for providing information to a user, the method including: receiving an input signal from a sensing device associated with a sensory modality of the user; generating a preprocessed signal upon preprocessing the input signal with a set of preprocessing operations; extracting a set of features from the preprocessed signal; processing the set of features with a neural network system; mapping outputs of the neural network system to a device domain associated with a device including a distribution of haptic actuators in proximity to the user; and at the distribution of haptic actuators, cooperatively producing a haptic output representative of at least a portion of the input signal, thereby providing information to the user.
