Compositions are provided comprising: 1) a solid metal oxide support having surface hydroxyl groups; 2) a silyl-containing compound bound to the solid metal oxide support through a silanol bond with the surface hydroxyl groups; and 3) a bis(glyoxime)-transition metal complex bound to the solid metal oxide support. These compositions can be used to make a colorimetric relative humidity-indicating sensor. A method of adjusting the colorimetric response of a moisture-indicating composition and a method of detecting moisture are also provided.

A method of packing tobacco includes supplying a quantity of tobacco into a plurality of open containers; closing the opening containers; inserting the closed containers within a flexible, non-porous bag having a closeable opening; closing the opening of the bag; and extracting air from the bag so as to create a sub-atmospheric pressure therein. The bag is configured to hold one or more tobacco containers, such as C48 or A48 cartons. In some embodiments the bag may be configured to hold up to six containers, such as C48 or A48 cartons.

The measuring method determines a humidity of the supplied gas mixture in the flow channel (42) and determines a concentration of the component on the basis of the optically detectable reaction and the measured humidity.

Compositions that include bis(glyoxime)-transition metal complexes bound to metal oxide solid supports are provided. In some embodiments the compositions include nickel dimethylglyoxime and the metal oxide supports can be alumina or silica. These compositions can be used to make a colorimetric moisture-indicating sensor that changes visible reflection spectrum quantitatively and reversibly according to the amount of moisture in contact with the sensor. Also provided is a method of detecting moisture using the provided compositions.
