A sample processing system 101 that may be automated and methods are disclosed where a number of sample processing systems 101, such as stainer, may be connected to a number of separate full function computers 181 through a stainer network 183 that may be isolated from other communication traffic. A network configuration may permit scalability and addressability so that additional sample processing systems 101, additional separate full function computers 181, and additional other devices such as label printers 200 may be easily added to the system. One or more remote information links 171 may be provided so that information transfer on a continuous or perhaps constant basis can be accommodated.

Automated integrated slide-processing system

The present invention relates to an integrated automated slide processing system, especially to stain, to cover and to digitize one or more microscope slides (49) in one turn. Said system comprises, as a single apparatus, at least one incubation drawer, an incubation drawer carrier (1), a manipulation tray (2), a manipulation arm (3), a reagent changing unit (4), a washing and rinsing unit, a drop removal unit, a staining/pipetting unit (13), a coverslipping unit (14), a preview image recording unit (15), a digitizing unit (16) and a control computer (18) electrically connected with and providing control over said units, wherein each of the one or more unstained and un-covered microscope slides with sample to be stained, covered and digitized is arranged in an incubation drawer having sidewalls defining a vertically constrained slide receiving space, and wherein the above listed units form a treating path along which said microscope slide (49) is converted into a stained, covered and, at least partially, digitized microscope slide when simultaneously guided over said treating path upon and in harmony with respective control signals provided by the control computer (18) to the respective units.

Method and apparatus for automatic staining of tissue samples

The present invention concerns an apparatus for staining tissue samples, said apparatus including a reagent section or reagent containers; at least one staining section or tissue samples, a robotic head or robotic element that may move reagent to a predetermined tissue sample, said robotic element being moveable above the reagent and the staining sections, a control element that may manage a staining process, a 2-D optical sensor to detect two-dimensional image data of a relevant property and that can feed the captured image data to the control element. By providing the robotic element with a 2-D optical sensor, a common image processor may be provided having multiple functions. By using a 2-D optical image processing system, the control system of the apparatus may easily be adapted to read various types of data presentations, just as actual images for sections of the apparatus may be identified in order to assess the condition of the apparatus. The optical sensor may be used to automatically identify the slides and the reagent containers present in the apparatus, just as the optical sensor may be used for checking if a slide is misplaced at or absent from a slide position, etc.

Assay reaction controller magazine

Devices and methods for providing and dispensing opposables onto slides are provided in which magazines loaded with opposables include retention arms to reduce movement of the opposables during shipment and processing and to reduce or eliminate contamination.

Method of handling slides

A method of positioning a slide for examination is disclosed. The method includes the steps of placing the slide in a carrier configured to retain the slide, placing the carrier in a cartridge configured to accept the carrier, coupling the cartridge to a microscope, and activating the microscope to automatically extract the carrier from the cartridge and position the carrier such that a portion of the slide is disposed within a field of view (FOV) of the microscope.

A slide transfer device is configured to transfer a plurality of slides from a first container to a second container, which can improve compatibility between slide preparation devices and microscopes. The first container is configured to receive slides from a slide preparation device, and the second container is configured to provide slides to a slide loader of a microscope. The first container may not be compatible with the microscope slide loader. The first container may differ from the second container by one or more of a maximum distance across, a slide capacity, a number of slide receptacles, a distance between slide receptacles, or a size of slide receptacles. The plurality of slides comprises a first orientation and a first order in the first container and the slide transfer device is configured to provide the plurality of slides to the second container with a second orientation or a second order.

Slide-scanner control

Control processes for a slide-scanning system comprising a carousel with a plurality of rack slots configured to receive slide racks via an exposed portion of the scanning system. In an embodiment, initializing the scanning system comprises automatically homing back-end and front-end components, wherein the front-end components comprise the carousel. An inventory of all slide racks in the carousel is automatically generated. If any slide rack was being processed by any back-end components, the slide rack is automatically unloaded into a corresponding rack slot. In addition, the carousel is automatically positioned to expose a starting subset of the rack slots within the exposed portion. This starting subset may comprise a maximum segment of adjacent empty rack slots.
