METHODS AND SYSTEM TO ASSIST SEARCH FOR LOST AND SUBMERGED OBJECTS
20180259642 · 2018-09-13 ·

Devices and methods for aiding a large area search for submerged objects such as aircraft. A searcher transmits interrogation signals to be received by a device at the target object. The interrogation signals have a long range relative to that of returned signals. The target device responds with a ping signal modified to be more easily found by means of information contained in the interrogation signal. The information may be inherent in the nature of the received signal or data encoded and embedded by the searching device. The target device may use a microprocessor to do complex operations using the information from the interrogation signal and other information. Detection of a weak ping is facilitated by such means as being beamed in the direction of the interrogation, arriving at a predictable time, or having parameters adapted to values requested by the searcher.

A location beacon assembly includes a wrist band that may be worn on a wrist. A beacon unit is coupled to the wrist band. The beacon unit is turned on when the beacon unit is exposed to water. The beacon unit selectively emits blue light. Thus, the beacon unit is visible at a maximum depth in water thereby facilitating a swimmer to be located when the swimmer is drowning. The beacon selectively emits an echolocation sound that has a frequency ranging between 10 kHz and 20 kHz. Thus, the beacon unit is audible at a maximum depth in water thereby facilitating the swimmer to be located when the swimmer is drowning.

The invention pertains to a method and system for determining a location of an identification tag (100) in a monitored area. The method comprises using a plurality of beacons (200) to broadcast (2010) beacon messages comprising an identification element relating to the originating beacon; receiving (2020) at a first set of beacons a localization message from an identification tag (100), the tag having received (1010) a beacon message, extracted (1020) the identification element from the received beacon message, and transmitted (1030) information related to the identification element as part of the localization message; performing (3010) a first level of localization of the tag on the basis of characteristics of the respective copies of the localization message received at the first set of beacons; and performing (3020) a second level of localization of the tag on the basis of the information related to the identification element.

Acoustic positioning transmitter and receiver system and method

An acoustic model determination approach for a real-time locating system is disclosed. The system includes one or more transmitting devices and one or more mobile devices. The acoustic model may be determined by deriving an acoustic representation of sub-structures within the building, and then forming the acoustic model based on the acoustic representation and the location and orientation of the static acoustic transmitting device. In another embodiment, an acoustic signal is transmitted from a static acoustic transmitting device, with the reflected signals received by the same static acoustic transmitting device in a receiving mode. Based on these received acoustic signals, the acoustic model is formed based on the reflected signals and the location and orientation of the static acoustic transmitting device.
