Waveguide image combiners for augmented reality displays

A waveguide image combiner is used to transmit a monochrome or full-color image in an augmented reality display. The combiner uses multiple stacked substrates and multiple pairs of incoupling and outcoupling VHOEs to expand a first FOV and an image expander to expand the second or perpendicular FOV. This suitably provides an expanded FOV that offers a diagonal FOV≥50°, a horizontal FOV≥40 and a vertical FOV≥25°. The combiner also delivers a large horizontal eye box up to 20 mm and a vertical eye box of 10 mm while maintaining high light efficiency of the real scene (e.g. >80%). The system is able to use a light engine based on broadband (10 nm≤Δλ≤40 nm) LEDs and maintain a large horizontal field of view and high transmission of the real imagery. The approach resolves issues with current embodiments including astigmatism, image overlap, color balance, and small light engine pupils leading to reduced eye boxes.

Multi-channel optical system

A multi channel beamsplitter system operating over a wide spectral band has high optical performance despite the fact that the incoming and/or exiting light is not collimated and its material is dispersive. This is achieved using wavefront compensators that are matched to the curvature of the wavefronts of the incoming and/or exiting light.

Spectrally combined fiber laser amplifier system and method

A method for providing spectral beam combining (SBC) including generating a plurality seed beams each having a central wavelength and a low fill factor profile, where the wavelength of all of the seed beams is different; amplifying the seed beams; causing the amplified beams to expand as they propagate so as to be converted from the low fill factor profile to a high fill factor profile where the high fill factor profile tapers to a lower value at a perimeter of each beam; causing a wavefront of the converted beams to flatten to provide a plurality of adjacent SBC beams having different wavelengths with minimal overlap and a minimal gap between the beams; collimating the SBC beams; and directing the collimated SBC beams onto an SBC element that spatially diffracts the individual beam wavelengths and directing the beams in the same direction as a combined output beam.

A wavelength beam combining system includes: at least one laser diode bar that includes a plurality of emitters arranged in a row from a first end side to a second end side, and a heating element placed on the second end side with respect to the plurality of emitters; an optical element that condenses beams emitted from the plurality of emitters; a diffraction grating; an external resonance mirror; and a controlling apparatus that controls power supplied to the plurality of emitters and the heating element. The laser diode bar is placed so that a locked wavelength for an emitter located on the second end side is longer than the locked wavelength for an emitter located on the first end side. The controlling apparatus controls the power supplied to the heating element so that the heating element has a higher temperature than the plurality of emitters.
