Ultra-flat optical device with high transmission efficiency

An optical device includes a nanostructured transparent dielectric film, which is a Huygens metasurface. The Huygens metasurface imparts a phase change to light propagating through or reflecting from the surface. The phase change can be achieved by means of a resonant interaction between light and the Huygens resonators, resulting in a controllable phase change of 0 to 2 with approximately 100% light transmission characterized by a below 0.1 dielectric loss tangent of delta and with the height of the resonators less than the wavelength of light. In one embodiment, the metasurface includes titanium dioxide, but many materials or stacks of different materials may be used. The optical device is functional throughout the visible spectrum between 380 and 700 nm. The nanostructured transparent dielectric film includes a plurality of Huygens resonators. The phase and the amplitude of the nanostructured transparent dielectric film are modulated by arranging the plurality of Huygens resonators such that certain properties, including the radius and height of each Huygens resonator, as well as the gap between two adjacent Huygens resonators, are controlled to optimize the performance of the optical device within the visible spectrum.

Actively controllable color using high contrast metastructures

A color changing or beam steering photonic device, which combines a high contrast metastructure (HCM) having a plurality of high index grating structures, into a low index membrane. In response to physical (or electrical) deformation of the membrane the low index gaps between adjacent grating bars changes which results in changing reflectance and transmission angles for steering a single wavelength of light and for causing a color change in said photonic device when subject to multiple light wavelengths. Deformation can result from direct physical stimulus, conversion from electrical or thermal to physical, and so forth. Refractive index change can also be initiated by carrier injection through electrodes. The apparatus is exemplified for use in color displays, beam steering, labeling micro entities, mechanical deformation sensing, camouflage, anti-counterfeiting, and other fields.

Photoelastic modulator having symmetric structure and forty-five degree double-drive photoelastic modulator

The present invention relates to a Photoelastic Modulator (PEM), particularly to a novel polarized light modulator structure based on a photoelastic effect. The PEM, which controls driving voltages of two groups of piezoelectric actuators, is able to implement polarized light modulation having a relatively large optical path difference, and polarized light modulator having a fast modulation shaft moving circumferentially, and the PEM operates stably without a moving component. The present invention includes the piezoelectric actuators, a light pass crystal and a driver controller. Two light pass faces of the light pass crystal are parallel regular octagons directly facing each other, and identical rectangles are formed by side faces of the light pass crystal. The piezoelectric actuators are in soft connection with middle positions of the rectangles by connection rubber layers. The width directions of the piezoelectric actuators are consistent with the direction of the light pass thickness of the light pass crystal, and the widths are slightly larger than the light pass thickness. The piezoelectric actuators are connected with electric output ends on the driver controller by electric adapters. This aspect is mainly applied to PEMs.
