Various systems and methods for adjusting the firmness of a spring mattress are described herein. Inflation elements having fingers may be coupled with a spring layer of a mattress to provide for inflating or deflating the fingers in the interstitial spaces defined by a group of springs of the mattress. Increasing the fluid pressure inside the fingers increases the lateral pressure on the springs. The increase in lateral pressure in turn increases the force required to compress the springs, ultimately resulting in increasing the firmness of the mattress. Conversely, decreasing the fluid pressure inside the fingers decreases the lateral pressure on the springs, which decreases the firmness of the mattress.

The lining is provided with a plurality of lattice-like units, each lattice-like unit defining a mounting space therein. The resilience supplying module is provided with a plurality of elastic bodies respectively provided in one of the mounting spaces. The air bag module is provided with a plurality of air bag units respectively provided in one of the mounting spaces. In this case, the air bag units may be inflated consistently, and the expanded volume of each of the air bag units after inflation may be limited to be uniform by the corresponding lattice-like unit. Thus, the problem of incapability of being kept evenness after inflation in the conventional practice is solved.

The control unit is configured to cause the moving mechanism to move the supporting members in the adaptable area as a function of the current pressure data provided by the pressure sensors, to locally change the density of the supporting members to provide a locally variable bunk firmness.

The controller is configured to selectively actuate the pump and one or more of the valves, while receiving feedback from the pressure sensors, in order to adjust the firmness of the mattress assembly and/or modulate the pressure in the mattress assembly.

A polymer fiber structure is provided between the first and second points and adjoins the spring. An example method of manufacturing a mattress is provided that includes arranging springs to provide a mattress innerspring. A polymer fiber structure is introduced in a first state to the innerspring to provide an assembly. The assembly is further processed and the polymer fiber structure is simultaneously altered from the first state to a second state.
