A mat assembly includes a center section and four ramps that create a unitary mat assembly for any desired use. The center section includes a top plate that provides the desired kind of mat surface for use and a sponge layer underlying the top plate to provide the center section with a cushioned feel during use. Each ramp includes a flange that extends from an end portion of the ramp, the flange configured to be joined between the top plate and sponge insert. The ramps can be joined to each other using a connector or a mitered connection.

Presenting this surface to the user may help remind him or her to move his or her feet to thereby adopt multiple poses, thereby preventing the user from maintaining any single pose for a fatigue-inducing duration.

However, concerns about utilization and comfort are points of resistance to standing desks. A “smart” pressure sensing mat is provided that may provide additional cushioning and comfort as well as a source of data input for record keeping, usage verification, user identification, and control signals. Signals may be utilized to report data (e.g., utilization, user operations, functions, etc.) and/or control components (e.g., trigger a standing desk to rise for standing use or lower for seated use, activate lights, etc.).

A system includes a pad, a high-friction surface connected to the pad, a slip-resistant surface connected to the pad, and a rug engageable with the high-friction surface. The rug is selectively dis-engageable to the pad for laundering of the rug. The pad and/or rug can also include fasteners to engage the rug to a floor or other surface underlying the pad or to the pad, itself, as applicable. The fasteners can be an adhesive polyurethane gel gripper connecting the rug to the floor or high-friction surface of the pad, as applicable. The fasteners can additionally or alternatively be hook and loop type fasteners connecting the rug and the floor or high-friction surface of the pad, as applicable. The hooks of the hook and loop type fastener may be embedded in the adhesive polyurethane gel gripper. In alternatives, loops may be embedded in the adhesive polyurethane gel gripper. The floor or, if applicable the high-friction surface, as the case may be, may include or comprise an adhesive polyurethane gel gripper and/or a hook and loop type fastener, to retain the rug in relation to the floor and pad to avoid shift, curl, or movement of the rug. The slip-resistant surface of the pad retains the rug and pad relatively free of shift or movement on a floor. The rug and attachment system can be used with or without the pad.
