The fob may have a plurality of buttons in differing embodiments, which are preferably illuminated via at least one LED that is positioned below each button. However, in one embodiment a singular large LED may sit below all buttons to illuminate the buttons simultaneously. The at least one LED can also produce any color known in the art, which can be changed by a user by pressing a color change button located on the side surface of the fob.

The access control system is configured to detect, using one or more sensors, when the latch is within a predetermined proximity of the catch, and responsive to detecting that the latch is not within the predetermined proximity of the catch, determine whether an authorized credential was received via a communication interface to open the latch, and when the authorized credential was received, register an authorized opening of the latch in a memory device, and when the authorized credential was not received, register an the unauthorized opening of the latch in the memory device and enter an alert state.

The sensor is arranged to receive at least one wireless signal emitted by the hand portable electronic device retained by the retainer. The apparatus further comprises processing circuitry configured to control the lock to transition the retainer from the locked configuration to the unlocked configuration, based on the at least one wireless signal received by the sensor, in order to enable the hand portable electronic device to be released from the retainer.
