Authentication of a Physical Credential

Aspects described herein may provide detection of a physical characteristic of a credential, thereby allowing for authentication of the credential. According to some aspects, these and other benefits may be achieved by detecting the physical characteristic with the credential. An image of a credential may be received. An optical characteristic of a secure feature of the credential may be determined. An expected optical characteristic of the secure feature may be determined based on known properties of the secure feature. A determination as to whether the credential is authentic may be based on a comparison of the determined optical characteristic of the secure feature to the expected optical characteristic of the secure feature.

Optical elements with anisotropic, patterned surface relief microstructures in which information is encoded in the distribution of the orientation of different zones. From the analysis of the distribution of the light scattered from the element, the orientation distribution in the element and therefore the encoded information can be evaluated. The elements are particularly useful for securing documents and articles against counterfeiting and falsification.

Proceeds deposit machine has determination setting data containing correspondence between types of the coupons and information relating to necessity of authentication determination. A type determination unit determines the type of deposited coupon and then refers to the determination setting data. If yes has been set for the necessity of the authentication determination for the determined type of coupon, an authentication determination unit performs authentication determination. If the coupon is determined to be counterfeit as result of the authentication determination, the proceeds deposit machine discharges this coupon. If the coupon is determined to be genuine, proceeds deposit machine stores this coupon in one of sheet cassettes. If no has been set for the necessity of the authentication determination for the determined type of the coupon, proceeds deposit machine stores this coupon in one of the sheet cassettes without performing the authentication determination by the authentication determination unit.

Authentication Hologram

An authentication system includes an object including an authentication hologram disposed over an area of a surface of the object. The authentication hologram is defined by a pattern of reflective material and includes latent authentication information. The system includes a computer-readable medium including program instructions for execution by one or more processors. The program instructions are executable by the one or more processors to: (i) receive, from an image capture device, a digital image of the authentication hologram, wherein light reflected by the reflective material is captured in the digital image of the authentication hologram, and (ii) detect the latent authentication information in the digital image of the authentication hologram, wherein an effect of the reflected light is reduced to detect the latent authentication information.

Method for securing and verifying a document

The invention relates to a method for securing a document including a visual element, carried out by a processing unit comprising processing means, the method comprising generation, from the visual element, of a reference security datum, and storage of the reference security datum, wherein the reference security datum is generated by means of an algorithm configured so as to generate: for any image acquired from the visual element, a security datum whereof the differences relative to the reference security datum are less than a determined threshold, and for any image acquired on a different visual element, a security datum whereof the differences relative to the reference security datum are greater than said threshold.

A system includes a plurality of optical identifiers and a reader for the optical identifiers. Each optical identifier has an optical substrate and a volume hologram (e.g., with unique data, such as a code page) in the optical substrate. The reader for the optical identifiers includes a laser, and a camera. The laser is configured to direct laser light into a selected one of the optical identifiers that has been placed into the reader to produce an image of the associated volume holograms at the camera. The camera is configured to capture the image. The captured image may be stored in a digital format by the system.

METHOD FOR DETERMINING AUTHENTICITY USING IMAGES THAT EXHIBIT PARALLAX

A method for determining the validity of a parallax image, including: receiving a parallax image's captured two-dimensional image having at least three target identifiers, wherein at least two target identifiers are located at different depth planes in the parallax image; identifying at least three target identifiers in the parallax image's captured two-dimensional image and determining spatial relationship between at least three target identifiers in the two-dimensional image of the parallax image; comparing the spatial relationship of at least three target identifiers in the parallax image's captured two-dimensional image against a predetermined spatial relationship of at least three target identifiers that indicates authenticity; and adjudicating the authenticity of the parallax image based on the degree of difference between spatial relationship of at least three target identifiers in the parallax image's captured two-dimensional image and the predetermined spatial relationship of at least three target identifiers.
