An infrared toaster and a method of toasting use a support configured to hold a food product relative to an infrared source. A light source and a camera are arranged relative to the support to illuminate the food product and capture digital images of the food product. A processor receives and analyzes successive images from the camera. The processor operates the IR source to achieve a predetermined toasting level of the food product. The processor operates the IR source to terminate operation directing IR energy when the predetermined toasting level is reached.

Each of the electric heating plates includes a substrate and a heat-generating metal film. A surface of the substrate of each of the two side electric heating plates, facing the baking chamber, is bonded with the heat-generating metal film. Front and back surfaces of the substrate of the middle heating plate are bonded with the heat-generating metal film.

TOASTER SENSING DEVICE

A toaster (103) having a side wall (10) with a reflective surface (16) to reflect radiant heat towards a toasting chamber (13), and an external surface to which there is attached a sensor assembly (12). The sensor assembly (12) provides a source beam to illuminate part of the product and receives a reflected beam that is received by a sensor, with the sensor providing a signal indicative of a property of the reflected beam and therefore a chromatic property of the product.

A first heat source is positioned to direct heat energy into the first toasting zone. A second heat source is positioned to direct heat energy into the second toasting zone. Interior extents of the first heat source and the second heat source are laterally spaced apart by a second distance.

Each slot is configured to insert a food item, such as a piece of bread, into an associated chamber. The lift is configured to lower the food item into the associated chamber. The heating elements are configured to toast the food item.

Each heating element segment includes a plurality of cutouts linked together and having an elliptical shape. The terminals, heating element segments, and buses are a continuous single sheet of conductive material. A method of making the heating element includes forming a pattern into the sheet of conductive material by etching the pattern into the conductive sheet using photolithography.
