Embodiments of the present invention are directed to provide a method and system for automatically applying artificial limits to display resolutions in a computing system to improve performance. Embodiments are described herein that automatically limits the display resolution of an application executing in a discrete graphics processing unit operating from configurations with limited means of data transfer to the system memory. By automatically limiting the resolution in certain detected circumstances, the rate of generated graphics data may be dramatically increased. Another embodiment is also provided which allows for the automatic detection of an application's initialization and pro-actively limiting the user-selectable resolutions in which the output of the application may be displayed in to a maximum resolution calculated for optimal performance. The application's termination is also detected, whereupon a comprehensive list of supported resolutions becomes available.

Wear compensation for a display
09830851 · 2017-11-28 · ·

Techniques for implementing aging compensation for a display are described. An example of an electronic device includes a display comprising pixels, each pixel comprising one or more Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The electronic device also includes a display aging compensation unit to receive input frame data corresponding to content to be displayed, adjust the input frame data to generate output frame data based on a degree of aging of the LEDs, and send the output frame data to the display. The electronic device also includes a display aging monitoring and compensation processing unit to accumulate aging data that describes the degree of aging of the LEDs. The aging data is accumulated by sampling the output frame data at a sampling point in accordance with a sampling configuration, and the aging data collected at the sampling point is applied to other pixels in the vicinity of the sampling point. The display aging monitoring and compensation processing unit determines a degree of compensation to apply to the other pixels based on the aging data collected at the sampling point and an aging difference between the other pixels and the sampling point.

Expedited display characterization using diffraction gratings

An image sensor of a camera configured with a diffraction grating is used to capture a diffraction image of an image rendering surface of a display device, for example, while a target image is being rendered on the image rendering surface of the display device. The diffraction image of the image rendering surface of the display device is analyzed to obtain measurements of native display capabilities of the display device. Display capability data is transmitted to a display management module for the display device. At least a portion of the display capability data is generated from the measurements of native display capabilities of the display device that are obtained from analyzing the diffraction image of the image rendering surface of the display device.
