Condition-based monitoring for materials in wellbore applications

A method for analyzing material wear in a hydrocarbon production environment is disclosed. The method includes the steps of preparing a sample of material to be disposed proximate the hydrocarbon production environment; selecting a placement location for the sample of material, wherein the placement location is in fluid communication with a fluid flow for which the impact of the fluid flow on the sample of material is to be tested; disposing the sample of material in the placement location for a pre-determined amount of time; allowing the sample of material to be exposed to the fluid flow; retrieving the sample of material from the placement location after the pre-determined amount of time has passed; and analyzing the sample of material for wear caused by the hydrocarbon production environment.

Tool for measuring corrosion in oil wells and method for measuring corrosion

A corrosion measuring tool for controlling corrosion in an oil well with a tubing has a hollow cylindrical barrel, a hollow element, an expandable sleeve, at least one coupon for corrosion measurement and an elongated member. The hollow element is located at the upper end of the hollow cylindrical barrel and has a conical upper portion and a cylindrical lower portion. The cylindrical lower portion is slidable within the barrel. The cylindrical lower portion has linkage and sliding retention. An expandable sleeve is located at the upper end of the hollow cylindrical barrel, below the conical upper portion. The sleeve has a fastener. Movement of the hollow element relative to the barrel in a downward direction causes the conical upper portion to expand the expandable sleeve. Movement of the hollow element in an upwardly direction releases the expandable sleeve to separate the fastener from the tubing.

The apparatus includes: a reactor to simulate a two-phase crude oil pipeline which includes a crude oil phase above a water phase. The reactor has an agitator to control a flow of the water phase in the reactor in response to a motor that drives an agitation rate of the agitator. A crude oil inlet supplies crude oil to the reactor for the crude oil phase. A water inlet supplies water to the reactor for the water phase. A control circuit is configured by code to control a proportion of the water to the crude oil supplied to the reactor and to control the motor to drive a desired agitation rate of the agitator. A biocide inlet supplies biocide to the reactor. A water sample outlet enables sampling of the water phase of the reactor.

FLEXIBLE PIPE ARMOR WIRE MONITORING SYSTEM AND METHOD

Disclosed are systems and methods for monitoring armor wires in a flexible pipe by inferring a condition of the armor wires using at least one polymeric coupon containing steel wires. The coupon is designed to simulate the conditions of the armor wires in the annulus of the flexible pipe. The coupon is removably held by a coupon holder in the bore of a surface pipe connected to the flexible pipe. The coupon can be removed from the bore of the surface pipe after a period of time to dissect the coupon and evaluate the steel wires. The systems and methods allow insight into the condition of the armor wires during operational life that does not otherwise exist at present.

Method And Apparatus for Detection of Pitting Corrosion Under Iron Sulfide Deposition
20210010366 · 2021-01-14 ·

A method for monitoring pitting corrosion of a production tubing in a hydrocarbon well under downhole conditions during a production process using a coupon segment, the method comprising the steps of placing the coupon segment in the hydrocarbon well at a placement depth, the coupon segment is exposed to produced fluids and comprises an outer layer, an inner layer, and a hollow middle layer comprises a tracer fluid operable to leak into the produced fluids when pitting corrosion penetrates the outer layer, operating the production process in the hydrocarbon well such that produced fluids flow through the production tubing to a surface of the hydrocarbon well and wherein the produced fluids contact the coupon segment such that pitting corrosion occurs on the coupon segment; obtaining a sample of the produced fluids at the surface of the hydrocarbon well; and measuring an amount of the tracer fluid in the sample.

High pressure / high temperature dynamic multiphase corrosion-erosion simulator

A system for measuring corrosion and corrosion-erosion rates in a high temperature, high pressure multiphase dynamic environment includes a plurality of ring-shaped test coupons disposed within a test vessel in a vertical arrangement relative to one another. A test fluid mixture is added to the vessel and the temperature and pressure are maintained such that the mixture exists in a multiphase condition that has a vertical stratification such that each test coupon is exposed to a different phase and/or combination of phases of the fluid. Impellers can be used to stir the fluid to provide a dynamic environment. The fluid can include particulate matter to simulate real world test conditions. Separator plates can be disposed at different vertical locations within the vessel to maintain separation between various phases of the fluids and further restrict particulate matter from migrating between sections of the test system.
