Ethylene sensor and method of making same

The ethylene sensor is formed from a substrate with a gold thin film layer formed thereon. The substrate may be formed from soda-lime glass with a thickness of approximately 1.0 mm. Correspondingly, the gold layer may have a thickness of approximately 200 nm. The gold layer is divided into first and second regions or electrodes by a variable impedance channel containing K.sub.0.003Au.sub.0.008Mg.sub.0.009Ca.sub.0.015Si.sub.0.11Na.sub.0.175O.sub.0.68 as an ethylene selective material. The channel may be configured such that first and second sets of interdigitated gold fingers are defined in the first and second regions or electrodes, respectively. An ohmmeter is connected to the first and second regions to measure a resistance therebetween. A reference resistance is initially measured that is indicative of an absence of ethylene. Subsequent measurements of the resistance are compared against this reference resistance, with variations in the measured resistance indicating the presence of ethylene.

Device and method for measuring the total organic carbon content of a sample fluid

A device for measuring the total organic carbon content (TOC) of a sample fluid comprises a measuring cell (2) defining a volume (3) for containing a sample fluid and an excimer lamp (20) arranged to cause an oxidation reaction of the sample fluid by emitting radiation onto the sample fluid in the volume (3). A pair of electrodes is arranged to measure the conductivity of the sample fluid during the oxidation reaction and at least one temperature senor (31) is arranged on the measuring cell (2) to measure a temperature that is related to the sample fluid. The total organic carbon content (TOC) of the sample fluid is determined on the basis of the measured conductivity compensated by the temperature related to the sample fluid.

Electromagnetic non-destructive quality testing method, and testing circuit and system therefor

A first-order resistor-inductor (RL) circuit is allowed to alternate a direct-current excitation response and a zero-input response so that a direct-current magnetic field generated by an inductor magnetizing coil changes alternately in magnetic field intensity with a change in magnitude of current. After a testing object is placed in the direct-current magnetic field changing alternately in magnetic field intensity, the testing object is magnetized and also causes a change in inductance of the magnetic field. Whether a change occurs in electromagnetic properties of the testing object can be determined and detected by detecting the inductance change of the magnetizing coil or detecting electrical characteristic change caused by the inductance change of the magnetizing coil, thereby determining whether quality defects such as steel wire cracks and wire breakage in a steel wire rope occur. Alternatively, the properties such as a sectional area or a zinc layer thickness can be analyzed.
