A portable endoscopic inspection system comprises an endoscope having a proximal end with a flanged eyepiece for observation and a distal end with a lens assembly for insertion into a region of interest. A light port transports incident light to the region of interest along an lighting pathway, and reflected light is transported along an imaging pathway from the lens assembly to the eyepiece. A wireless imaging unit comprises a light source which detachably couples to the light port for generating the incident light, and an imaging sensor for recording images of the reflected light from the eyepiece. The wireless imaging unit comprises a variable coupling system which mechanically couples the imaging sensor to the flanged eyepiece independent of the shape and/or size of the flange of the eyepiece.

In order to reduce costs for endoscopic examinations and to enable new operating concepts, an image recording arrangement is provided in which an adapter that enables bi-directional communication between a camera control unit and an image generation unit which has an image sensor. A standardized data interface is configured between the camera control unit and the adapter. The adapter is defined for use with a specific type of image generation unit. Accordingly, the adapter has a communication apparatus which translates control and adjustment commands transmitted by the camera control unit into a format processable by the image generation unit and provides image data from the image sensor in a format processable by the camera control unit. The camera control unit can therefore access, control and adjust the image generation unit and can display image data from the image generation unit without adaptation to the image generation unit connected to the adapter and therefore without knowledge of said image generation unit.

The communication apparatus can include a user console in communication with a communication device having a surgical tool. The communication device can include a microphone to convert a sound input into an acoustic input signal. The communication device can transmit the acoustic input signal to the user console for reproduction as a sound output for a remote operator. The surgical tool can include an endoscope having several microphones mounted on a housing. The surgical tool can be a sterile barrier having a microphone and a drape. The microphone(s) of the surgical tools can face a surrounding environment such that a tableside staff is a source of the sound input that causes the sound output, and a surgeon and the tableside staff can communicate in a noisy environment. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

A characteristic of a blood product in a blood product container is determined. Using a smartphone, an image is acquired of a blood bag or tubing of the blood product container disposed in front of the smartphone. The image is processed using a processing circuit of the smartphone or a remote computer in wireless communication with the smartphone. The processing identifies a characteristic of the blood product from the image. A visual notification is generated on a display of the smartphone of the identified characteristic of the blood product.
