A method of passive asset tracking using observations of Wi-Fi access points includes associating unique identifying information of a Wi-Fi access point with a moveable asset in an asset tracking database, where the Wi-Fi access point is disposed on, attached to, or integrated, receiving observation data from a Wi-Fi AP Database including the unique identifying information of the Wi-Fi access point and location information of the Wi-Fi access point, determining a location of the moveable asset based, at least in part, on the observation data of the Wi-Fi access point, and storing the location of the moveable asset in the asset tracking database. There is no communication between the asset tracking database and one or more wireless devices that report an encounter with the Wi-Fi access point, comprising observation data, to the Wi-Fi AP Database.

The processor generates a positioning map to include an instance of neighbor-cell information corresponding to the neighbor cell. The instance of neighbor-cell information comprises, is associated with, and/or is indexed by the defined globally unique identifier. The instance of neighbor-cell information may be accessed via an observed locally unique identifier when determining a position estimate for a computing entity that observed a neighbor cell corresponding to the observed locally unique identifier.

A management system for objects under monitoring that is capable of managing the presence of moving objects under monitoring. The management system includes a plurality of beacon terminals, one or more management terminals, and a management server. The beacon terminals are respectively held by the moving objects under monitoring, and each have a unique identifier and broadcast a beacon signal. The one or more management terminals are respectively held by one or more moving bodies moving in one or more areas, receive beacon signals to acquire beacon identifiers and beacon presence information, and acquire location information via a positioning system. The management terminals output beacon information spontaneously or upon request. The management server determines the state of presence of the objects under monitoring in the one or more areas, based on the beacon information acquired from the one or more management terminals.

The present invention is for a system and method for determining the proximity of a mobile device to a location without the use of a satellite based or other location awareness system, nor a stationary beacon of any kind. Instead, the mobile device monitors radio frequency broadcast identification codes from nearby mobile devices, and determines if the set of detected identification codes is sufficiently similar to a weighted set of identification codes attributed to specified location. If the calculation of similarity meets the confidence conditions of the system, notification is made that the customer or visitor has arrived. The invention utilizes a combination of confidence interval computation, machine learning, and fault tolerance mechanisms to optimize the success of correctly detecting that the device is near the relevant location.

Since the positioned terminal obtains the current position information through positioning module and sends the information to the positioning terminal only when it receives the positioning request sent by the positioning server and it turns off the positioning module after sending the current position information, the electric quantity consumed by the positioned terminal can be reduced. The save of the electric quantity of the positioning terminal leads to the improvement of the endurance time of the positioned terminal.
