Multi-directional backlight, multi-user multiview display, and method
A multi-directional backlight and a multi-user multiview display provide emitted light and associated multiview images having different mutually exclusive angular ranges and different user-specific view zones. The multi-directional backlight includes first and second multiview backlights, each of which includes multibeam elements configured to provide emitted light having directional light beams with directions corresponding to view directions of a respective multiview images. The emitted light provided by the first multiview backlight has a first angular range that is mutually exclusive of a second angular range of emitted light provided by the second multiview backlight, at respective first and second convergence distances. The multi-user multiview display includes a first multiview display configured to provide a first multiview image to a first user in a first view zone and a second multiview display configured to provide a second multiview image to a second user in a second view zone.
TRANSFLECTIVE, PCM-BASED DISPLAY DEVICE
The invention is notably directed to a transflective display device. The device comprises a set of pixels, wherein each of the pixels comprises a portion of bi-stable, phase change material, hereafter a PCM portion, having at least two reversibly switchable states, in which it has two different values of refractive index and/or optical absorption. The device further comprises one or more spacers, optically transmissive, and extending under PCM portions of the set of pixels. One or more reflectors extend under the one or more spacers. An energization structure is in thermal or electrical communication with the PCM portions, via the one or more spacers. Moreover, a display controller is configured to selectively energize, via the energization structure, PCM portions of the pixels, so as to reversibly switch a state of a PCM portion of any of the pixels from one of its reversibly switchable states to the other. A backlight unit is furthermore configured, in the device, to allow illumination of the PCM portions through the one or more spacers. The backlight unit is controlled by a backlight unit controller, which is configured for modulating one or more physical properties of light emitted from the backlight unit. The invention is further directed to related devices and methods of operation.
Optical expander device for providing an extended field of view
An optical device comprises a waveguide plate, which in turn comprises: an in-coupling element to form first guided light and second guided light by diffracting input light, first expander element to form third guided light by diffracting the first guided light, second expander element to form fourth guided light by diffracting the second guided light, and an out-coupling element to form first output light by diffracting the third guided light, and to form second output light by diffracting the fourth guided light, wherein the out-coupling element is arranged to form combined output light by combining the first output light with the second output light, wherein the in-coupling element has a first grating period for forming the first guided light, and wherein the in-coupling element has a second different grating period for forming the second guided light.
Lighting fixture
A lighting fixture includes a housing, a first light source, a light guide plate, and a second light source. The housing has an inner cavity and a mounting hole, the mounting hole communicates the inner cavity with an external environment of the housing, the light guide plate is installed in the mounting hole. A side of the light guide plate faces the inner cavity, the other side of the light guide plate faces an outside of the housing. The second light source projects second light to the light guide plate, the second light is capable of being projected to the outside of the housing through the light guide plate. The first light source projects first light, and is configured such that the first light is projected to the outside of the housing through the light guide plate, and the housing is a non-light-transmitting housing.
Automobile with conformal film-based lightguide
An automobile comprises a light transmitting film with a thickness not greater than 0.5 millimeters with a core layer, a lightguide region of the film comprises a light emitting region with light extracting features positioned to receive and extract light from at least one light source propagating by total internal reflection within the core layer out of the core layer, and a light mixing region positioned between the at least one light source and the light emitting region, wherein a surface of the portion of the automobile is visible through the light emitting region of the film when the at least one light source is not emitting light and the light transmitting film is conformal with the surface of the portion of the automobile. The surface of the film may have arcuate cross-sectional shape conforming to a curved surface of the portion of the automobile.
LED MODULE
Disclosed is a LED module. The LED module includes a cover part, a board part connected to a front side of the cover part, a light emitting part electrically connected to the board part, disposed on a front side of the board part, and that emits light through a side surface thereof, and a panel part disposed on the front side of the board part, and the panel part includes a light guide unit including a plurality of light output parts that guides and outputs light emitted from the side surface of the light emitting part.

According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first transparent substrate including a first main surface, a second transparent substrate including a first end portion, a liquid crystal layer containing strip-shaped polymers and liquid crystal molecules, a third transparent substrate including a second end portion and a second main surface, a first light-emitting element and a first light guide. The first light guide includes a first surface and a second surface. A height from the first main surface to the second surface is less than a height from the first main surface to the second main surface.

A backlight unit for a binocular-holographic display device and a holographic display device including the same are provided. The backlight unit includes a light source unit which outputs light, a first beam expansion unit which expands, in a first direction, the light output from the light source unit, a second beam expansion unit which expands, in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, the light output from the first beam expansion unit, and a beam deflection unit which diffracts light incident on the first beam expansion unit. The holographic display device includes the backlight unit, a field lens, and a spatial light modulator.
