Passive, proportional measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide consumption for assessment of metabolic parameters
A conventional flow tube for a metabolic cart is usually a straight length of pipe whose inner diameter is fixed by the respiratory burden imposed by the flow tube on the user, with a smaller diameter imposing a higher respiratory burden. The ratio of the straight flow tube's length to diameter is fixed by fluid dynamics, so increasing the flow tube's diameter causes the flow tube's length to increase. As the flow tube gets longer, it exerts more torque on the user's neck and jaw, creating discomfort. Reducing the flow tube's length causes an undesired increase in the respiratory burden but increasing the flow tube's diameter to reduce the respiratory burden makes the flow tube less comfortable, making the flow tube unconformable, hard to breathe through, or both. Bending the flow tube, e.g., in an L shape, makes it possible to increase the flow tube's propagation length without increasing the flow tube's lever arm length.
Stimulator systems and methods for obstructive sleep apnea
An electrode lead comprises an electrically insulative cuff body and at least three axially aligned electrode contacts circumferentially disposed along the inner surface of the cuff body when in the furled state. The electrode contacts may be circumferentially disposed around a nerve, and an electrical pulse train may be delivered to the electrode contacts thereby stimulating the nerve to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The electrical pulse train may be one that pre-conditions peripherally located nerve fascicles to not be stimulated, while stimulating centrally located nerve fascicles. A feedback mechanism can be used to titrate electrode contacts and electrical pulse train to the patient. A sensor that is affixed to the case of a neurostimulator can be used to measure physiological artifacts of respiration, and a motion detector can be used to sense tapping of the neurostimulator to toggle the neurostimulator between an ON position and an OFF position.

A method is presented for predicting heat stroke of a subject. The method includes an earbud covered with a waterproof moisture permeable membrane allowing for moisture penetration, the earbud including an infrared (IR) temperature sensor for measuring core body temperature of the subject, wherein the IR temperature sensor is covered with a waterproof IR transmittable film to inhibit water drops from contacting a detector of the IR temperature sensor, a first humidity sensor positioned within a sweat flow path within the earbud, a second humidity sensor positioned outside the earbud, and a sodium ion (Na.sup.+) concentration sensor for measuring hydration levels of the subject.
Wearable respiration measurements system
A wearable system configured to collect thermal measurements related to respiration. The system includes a frame configured to be worn on a user's head, and at least one non-contact thermal camera (e.g., thermopile or microbolometer based sensor). The thermal camera is small and lightweight, physically coupled to the frame, located close to the user's face, does not occlude any of the user's mouth and nostrils, and is configured to take thermal measurements of: a portion of the right side of the user's upper lip, a portion of the left side of the user's upper lip, and a portion of the user's mouth. The thermal measurements are forwarded to a computer that calculates breathing related parameters, such as breathing rate, an extent to which the breathing was done through the mouth, an extent to which the breathing was done through the nostrils, and ratio between exhaling and inhaling durations.
Portable spirometer
The present invention relates to a portable spirometer, comprising a housing and a mouthpiece being releasably connected to said housing, wherein the housing encloses a sensor unit being in fluid communication with a flow channel receiving part of a flow of exhaled or inhaled air from a main flow channel of the mouthpiece when connected to said housing, whereby the sensor unit is configured to measure one or more characteristics of part of the flow of exhaled or inhaled air passed to the sensor unit via the mouthpiece, characterised in that said sensor unit comprises at least one digital differential pressure sensor comprising a heating element and a temperature sensor arranged upstream of the heating element and a reference temperature sensor arranged downstream of the heating element.
METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR DETECTION AND MONITORING OF HEALTH PARAMETERS
Methods and apparatus provide monitoring of coughing and/or a sleep disordered breathing state of a person. One or more sensors may be configured for non-contact active and/or passive sensing. The processor(s) may extract respiratory effort signal(s) from one or more motion signals generated by active non-contact sensing with the sensor(s). The processor(s) may extract one or more energy band signals from an acoustic audio signal generated by passive non-contact sensing with the sensor(s). The processor(s) may assess the energy band signal(s) and/or the respiratory efforts signal(s) to generate intensity signal(s) representing sleep disorder breathing modulation. The processor(s) may classify feature(s) derived from the one or more intensity signals to generate measure(s) of coughing and/or sleep disordered breathing. The processor may evaluate sensing signal(s) to generate indication(s) of cough event(s) and/or cough type which may include generating an indication of a coronavirus disease or a coronavirus disease cough type.
DEVICES AND METHODS FOR MONITORING PHYSIOLOGIC PARAMETERS
Devices and methods for monitoring physiologic parameters are described herein which may utilize a non-invasive respiratory monitor to detect minor variations in expiratory airflow pressure known as cardiogenic oscillations which are generated by changes in the pulmonary blood volume that correspond with the cardiac cycle. These cardiogenic oscillations are a direct indicator of cardiac function and may be used to correlate various physiologic parameters such as stroke volume, pulmonary artery pressure, etc.
DEVICE, SYSTEM, AND METHOD FOR ASSESSING SLEEP DISORDERS
Methods, systems, and devices for assessing breathing disorders such as apneas and hypopneas are provided. An airflow monitoring device can be positioned in thermal communication with respiratory airflow (nasal and/or oral airflow). The airflow monitoring device can include a thermistor configured to measure heating and cooling cycles of respiratory airflow and determine respiratory airflow velocity from analysis of thermistor cooling. This velocity, alone or in combination with other physiological parameters, such as blood oxygen saturation, respiration effort, heart rate, body movement, etc. can be employed to assess sleep disorders.
