An image forming apparatus includes an apparatus body provided with an opening portion, an opening/closing member, a fixing unit, and a moving unit provided in the apparatus body and configured to move the fixing unit from a first position toward a second position above the first position. Movement of the fixing unit from the first position to the second position is restricted in a state in which the opening/closing member is positioned at the closed position and is allowed in a state in which the opening/closing member is positioned at the open position. The moving unit includes a support portion configured to support the fixing unit positioned at the second position such that the fixing unit is attachable and detachable. The support portion extends in a longitudinal direction of the fixing unit and supports the fixing unit from below.

A fixing device includes a fixing belt, a pressing member, a heater, and a separation member. The heater includes a base board, and a plurality of resistance heating elements. The base board is made of insulator and extends the in axial direction corresponding to the fixing belt. The resistance heating elements are arranged on one surface of the base board, where faces an inner surface of the fixing belt, with gaps in the axial direction, and generates heat by being energized. The separation member has at least one separation claw which is in contact with the surface of the pressing member at a position displaced in the axial direction relative to the gaps.

The detection unit has a contact portion and a detection portion, and the contact portion is movable to a first position and a second position. The controller moves the contact portion from the second position by outputting the signal for setting the conveying speed to a second speed larger than the conveying speed when the contact portion is located at the second position, and the controller determines an abnormal state when the contact portion is located at the second position and an output time of the signal is longer than or equal to a predetermined time.

According to one embodiment, a fixing device capable of extending a lifespan of a component is provided. A fixing device of an embodiment includes a cylindrical body, a pressure roller, an adjustment mechanism, and a control section. The pressure roller can come into contact with the cylindrical body to form a nip. The adjustment mechanism can adjust a pressing force of the pressure roller against the cylindrical body. The control section controls the adjustment mechanism so that a first pressing force is realized as the pressing force when the pressure roller rotates at a first speed. The control section controls the adjustment mechanism so that a second pressing force smaller than the first pressing force is realized as the pressing force when the pressure roller rotates at a second speed greater than the first speed.
