Provided is a method for mapping a neural area involved in speech processing, including applying a plurality of recording electrodes to a surface of a cortex of a human subject, presenting a plurality of auditory stimuli to the subject wherein some of the plurality of stimuli are speech sounds and others of the plurality of auditory stimuli are non-speech sounds, recording brain activity during the presenting of the plurality of auditory stimuli, and identifying one or more brain areas wherein activity changes more after presentation of speech sounds than it does after presentation of non-speech sounds, wherein the human subject does not speak during the presenting and the recording. Also provided is a method for mapping a neural area involved in speech production wherein the human subject does not speak during presenting speech stimuli and recording neural activity.

An electrode for use in ambulatory BEG signal collection includes an electrode contact comprising a gelatin or hydrogel polymer having low input impedance. The electrode contact retains adhesive ability and low input impedance over long periods of time. A system using the electrode includes circuits and software for analyzing EEG signals to detect and report ictal events in real time. At least part of the system is wearable; and advantageously part of the system resides in a cloud based system. A signal analyzer incorporated in the system provides real time ictal signal identification through physical graphing and cross-correlation. In some aspects the analyzer also provides confirmation of ictal signal identification by physical graphing and machine deep learning. Analysis of physical graphs may conveniently be performed using a graphics processing unit to speed processing.

Systems and methods for seizure detection with a statistical analysis and an artificial intelligence analysis

A seizure detection system including one or more circuits configured to receive an electroencephalogram (EEG) signal generated based on electrical brain activity of a patient. The one or more circuits are configured to identify candidate seizures with a statistical analysis that identifies the candidate seizures based on changes in non-linear features of the EEG signal, determine to switch from identifying the candidate seizures with the statistical analysis to an artificial intelligence model, and switch from identifying the candidate seizures with the statistical analysis to identifying the candidate seizures based on the artificial intelligence model with the EEG signal.

Neuromodulation apparatus, method and system

Representative methods, apparatus and systems are disclosed for providing concurrent electrical stimulation and electrical recording in a human or non-human subject, such as for neuromodulation, with the apparatus coupleable to an electrode array. A representative apparatus is typically an integrated circuit including: stimulation circuits, recording circuits, and blocking circuits responsive to control signals to block the stimulation voltage or current on an electrode from a corresponding recording circuit, while other recording circuits may simultaneously record electrical signals from other electrodes and generate recorded data. A representative stimulation circuit may include current sources; a first multiplexer for current source selection; a second multiplexer for electrode selection; a switchable voltage offset circuit; a switchable grounding circuit; and a stimulation controller providing control signals to provide the electrical stimulation, such as biphasic or monophasic stimulation, and bipolar or unipolar stimulation. Off-chip communication, control, along with power and voltage level control, are also provided.

Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and apparatus for treating a medical condition of a patient, involving detecting a physiological cycle or cycles of the patient and applying an electrical signal to a portion of the patient's vagus nerve through an electrode at a selected point in the physiological cycle(s). The physiological cycle can be the cardiac and/or respiratory cycle. The selected point can be a point in the cardiac cycle correlated with increased afferent conduction on the vagus nerve, such as a point from about 10 msec to about 800 msec after an R-wave of the patient's ECG, optionally during inspiration by the patient. The selected point can be a point in the cardiac cycle when said applying increases heart rate variability, such as a point from about 10 msec to about 800 msec after an R-wave of the patient's ECG, optionally during expiration by the patient.

A method, comprising receiving a time series of patient body signal, determining first and second sliding time windows for the time series; applying an autoregression algorithm, comprising: applying an autoregression analysis to each of the first and second windows, yielding autoregression coefficients and a residual variance for each window; estimating a parameter vector for each window based on the autoregression coefficients and residual variances; and determining a difference between the parameter vectors; and determining seizure onset and seizure termination based on the difference between the parameter vectors. A non-transitory computer readable program storage unit encoded with instructions that, when executed by a computer, perform the method.
