Orthopedic alignment guide

Orthopedic guide, and methods of using the guide, for alignment of bone under fluoroscopic imaging. In an exemplary embodiment, the guide may include a radiopaque rod, a radiolucent carrier, and a radiopaque indicator held by the carrier. The rod and the indicator may be parallel to the same plane, and may form an angle between one another of less than 90 degrees when projected orthogonally onto the plane. The rod may be configured to be aligned with an axis defined by one or more bones of the leg, and the indicator aligned with a joint of the leg, in an anterior-posterior, fluoroscopic view of the leg. The angle formed between the rod and the indicator may correspond to an anatomic orientation of the axis and the joint relative to one another in a frontal plane of the leg.

A smart surgical instrument for artificial joint replacement includes a femur resection device, a tibia resection device, and a detector having a shape corresponding to the resected surfaces of a femur and a tibia. The femur resection device includes a laser device such that the femur resection device can be aligned for resection of the femur without drilling an intramedullary hole, thereby preventing complications attributable to the intramedullary hole. The tibia resection device includes a laser device, thereby enabling an easy and fast surgical operation without using an extramedullary aligner used for alignment of a tibia during resection of the tibia. The detector includes a rotation detection means and a pressure detection means and is inserted between trials to allow numerical verification for medial and lateral balance of forces and a rotation state of the trials. The surgical instrument enables a precise, accurate, easy, and fast surgical operation.

ACTUATED RETRACTOR WITH TENSION FEEDBACK

Methods and apparatus for performing joint laxity measurement are disclosed. A retractor includes a plurality of spacers, such as plates, that are capable of being moved from a central portion of the retractor by a carriage mechanism. In some cases, the carriage mechanism may press against ramps connected to internal sides of the plates, thereby causing the plates to be displaced outwardly. In other cases, the carriage mechanism may include blades that rotate and press against the internal sides of the plates, thereby causing the plates to be displaced outwardly. The retractor is mounted on a surgical device configured to actuate the carriage mechanism. When the retractor is placed in a joint and the carriage mechanism is actuated, a measurement of the joint laxity may be determined based upon characteristics of the retractor and/or the surgical device.

DETERMINING A RANGE OF MOTION OF AN ARTIFICIAL KNEE JOINT
20220000397 · 2022-01-06 ·

A data processing method for determining a range of motion of an artificial knee joint which connects a femur and a tibia via a medial ligament and a lateral ligament, wherein at least the femur comprises an implant which forms a medial condyle and a lateral condyle, the method comprising the steps of: acquiring the maximum lengths of the lateral ligament and the medial ligament for a particular flexion angle of the knee joint; calculating a first virtual position between the femur and the tibia in which the lateral condyle of the femoral implant touches the tibia and the medial ligament is stretched to its maximum length; calculating a maximum valgus angle of the range of motion from the first virtual position; calculating a second virtual position between the femur and the tibia in which the medial condyle of the femoral implant touches the tibia and the lateral ligament is stretched to its maximum length; and calculating a maximum varus angle of the range of motion from the second virtual position.

Soft tissue tension and bone resection instruments and methods

A device for preparing a femur of a patient for receipt of a knee implant in both extension and flexion relative to a resected tibia plateau based on applying tension to medial and lateral collateral ligaments of said patient, comprising a tibial baseplate, a tensioner, the tensioner comprising a tensioner body having a tensioner portion, the tensioner portion affixed to the tibial baseplate, and an expander arm comprising an elongated body portion, a superior side of the elongated body portion having a spiked tip adjacent a posterior end thereof. The spiked tip interacts with an intracondylar notch under tension. The expander arm is operatively connected to the tensioner body via the tensioner portion, the tensioner portion configured for use in selectively raising and lowering the expander arm relative to the tibial baseplate to apply tension to the medial and lateral collateral ligaments in extension or flexion.

Motion classification user library

A method includes collecting reference motion data in a device from a motion sensor worn by a user for a movement having a predetermined classification. The motion sensor is attached to a limb having a joint. A user library entry is generated in the device based on the reference motion data and the predetermined classification. Additional motion data is collected in the device from the motion sensor. User motions in the additional motion data corresponding to the user library entry are classified in the device. Range of motion data associated with the user motions is generated in the device. A report is generated in the device including the user motions and the associated range of motion data.

Disclosed herein is a joint implant including a first implant coupled to a first bone of a joint, and a second implant coupled to a second bone of the joint and contacting the first implant. The second implant can include a plurality of sensors configured to measure data and a processor operatively coupled to the plurality of sensors and adapted to receive the data from the sensors. The first implant can be a femoral implant coupled to a femur. The second implant can be a patellar implant coupled to a patella. Sensor data from the patellar implant can indicate movement between the femoral implant and the patellar implant and identify patella condition such as a patellar rotation, patellar tilt and patellar tendonitis.
