An adapter assembly includes an elongated body configured to couple to a handle assembly and a loading unit assembly. The adapter assembly includes an oscillator configured to output a voltage signal. A sensor determines a connection status of the loading unit assembly coupled to the adapter assembly based on a change in the voltage signal. The voltage signal includes a rectified voltage output and an induced voltage output and changes in response to the approximation of a winding disposed within a loading unit assembly to the oscillator.

Surgical instrument for use with a robotic system

A surgical instrument for use with a robotic system that has a control unit and a shaft portion that includes an electrically conductive elongated member that is attached to a portion of the robotic system. The elongated member is configured to transmit control motions from the robotic system to an end effector.

CLIP APPLIER AND CARTRIDGE

A clip applier may be configured to releasably secure a surgical clip contained in a cavity of a cartridge and having first and second leg members. The clip applier may include first and second jaw members. The first jaw member may include a first clip engagement portion configured to engage the first leg member, and a first cartridge engagement portion including at least one first flange extending laterally of the first clip engagement portion. The second jaw member may include a second clip engagement portion configured to engage the second leg member, and a second cartridge engagement portion including at least one second flange extending laterally of the second engagement portion. The first and second flange(s) may be configured to abut side surfaces of the cartridge to align the first and second jaw members with the first and second leg members.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH WIRELESS COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A CONTROL UNIT OF A ROBOTIC SYSTEM AND REMOTE SENSOR

A surgical instrument for use with a robotic system that has a control unit and a shaft portion that includes an electrically conductive elongated member that is attached to a portion of the robotic system. The elongated member is configured to transmit control motions from the robotic system to an end effector.

Surgical instrument for assessing the state of a staple cartridge

A surgical stapling instrument comprising a handle, an elongate shaft, an end effector, a motor couplable with a supply of current, a firing member operably responsive to the motor, a current sensor, and a control circuit is disclosed. The firing member is movable from a proximal position to a distal position during a firing stroke. The control circuit comprises a processor and a memory configured to store instructions which, when executed from the memory cause the processor to activate the motor in response to an actuation input, receive an input from the current sensor regarding the current draw of the motor, deactivate the motor when the current draw of the motor exceeds a threshold current when the firing member is within a threshold distance relative to the proximal position, and retract the firing member to the proximal position.

Interlock and surgical instrument including same

A robotic surgical system comprising a surgical robot, a surgical instrument, a motor, and a current sensor is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises an end effector, a firing assembly, and a lockout mechanism. The firing assembly comprises a firing member movable from an unfired position to a fired position during a firing stroke and a sled movable from a proximal position to a distal position. The lockout mechanism is configured to prevent the firing stroke when the sled is not in the proximal position. The motor is operably coupled with the firing member and couplable with a supply of current. When the current through the motor exceeds a threshold value the firing member is prevented from completing the firing stroke. The threshold value corresponds to the current through the motor when the lockout mechanism is activated. The motor is de-energized when the current through the motor exceeds the threshold value.

Interlock and surgical instrument including same

A surgical instrument is disclosed. The instrument includes an end effector comprising a moveable cutting instrument to cut an object and a motor coupled to the end effector. The motor actuates the cutting instrument in response to a current therethrough, causing the cutting instrument to move between a proximal-most position and a distal-most position. The instrument includes an interlock coupled to the end effector and to the motor to prevent actuation of the cutting instrument based on the current through the motor.

Surgical clip applier jaw alignment

A surgical clip applier and methods for applying surgical clips to a vessel, duct, shunt, etc., during a surgical procedure are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a surgical clip applier is provided having a housing with a shaft extending therefrom with opposed jaws formed on a distal end thereof. A formed tube can extend along the shaft and it can be configured to advance over the jaws to move the jaws from an open position to a closed position to crimp the clip positioned therebetween. The surgical clip applier can include a variety of features to facilitate use of the device, including engagement features formed between the former tube and the jaws to prevent scissoring and misalignment of the jaws to ensure proper closure of the jaws.

Clip applier with replaceable tips

A method of securing a surgical clip to a clip applier may include engaging a first applier tip with a first jaw member, and engaging a second applier tip with a second jaw member. The jaw members may be secured within sleeve portions of the applier tips. The surgical clip may then be received between the first and second jaw members and secured with the first and second applier tips. The surgical clip may be secured to the clip applier by receiving a proximal portion of the surgical clip between a first protrusion of the first applier tip and a second protrusion of the second applier tip, receiving a first boss member on a first leg member of the surgical clip in a recess of the first applier tip, and receiving a second boss member on a second leg member of the surgical clip in a recess of the second applier tip.
