Surgical instrument including an articulation lock
A surgical instrument comprising a handle, an elongate shaft, an end effector, an articulation joint, an articulation knob, an articulation member, and an articulation lock is disclosed. The end effector is rotatably coupled to the elongate shaft by the articulation joint. The articulation knob is rotatable between an un-rotated position and rotated positions. The articulation lock comprises a lock member configured to move between a locked position where the lock member is engaged with a detent of the end effector and an unlocked position where the lock member is disengaged from the end effector. The lock member is movable between the locked position and the unlocked position by the articulation knob. The articulation member is moved from a proximal position toward a distal position to articulate the end effector when the articulation knob is moved from the un-rotated position toward a rotated position.
Firing assembly comprising a multiple failed-state fuse
Surgical instruments are disclosed comprising a firing assembly including a fuse having a plurality of operating states.
Layer of material for a surgical end effector
A staple cartridge comprising a tissue thickness compensator is disclosed. The tissue thickness compensator comprises an external layer and tubular elements. The tubular elements are interconnected and positioned within the external layer. The tubular elements comprise apertures defined therein and the tubular elements are configured to collapse as pressure is applied to the tissue thickness compensator by tissue during the firing motion. The apertures enable fluids from the tissue to permeate the tissue thickness compensator.
SURGICAL STAPLING INSTRUMENT COMPRISING A RETRACTION SYSTEM
A surgical instrument comprising a firing drive and a bailout retraction system is disclosed.
SURGICAL STAPLING DEVICE WITH FIRING LOCKOUT MEMBER
A surgical stapling device includes a tool assembly and a drive assembly. The tool assembly includes an anvil assembly, and a cartridge assembly that includes a channel member and a staple cartridge. The staple cartridge includes a cartridge body, staples, pushers, and an actuation sled. The drive assembly has a working member that is movable through the tool assembly to advance the actuation sled through the staple cartridge and actuate the tool assembly. The anvil assembly supports a lockout member that interacts with the drive assembly when the actuation sled is not positioned in a proximal portion of the cartridge body to prevent advancement of the drive assembly and firing of the stapling device.
SELECTABLE JAW CLOSURE OF A ROBOTIC SURGICAL SYSTEM
A surgical instrument includes an end effector, a shaft assembly, a drive, and an activating mechanism. The end effector includes first and second jaws. At least one of the first and second jaws is pivotable relative to the other of the first and second jaws between open and closed positions. The shaft assembly extends proximally from the end effector. The drive is operatively connected to a portion of at least one of the end effector or the shaft assembly. The activating mechanism includes an actuation body operatively connected to the drive. The portion is configured to perform a first actuation profile in response to the actuation body moving along a first predetermined path or perform a second actuation profile in response to the actuation body moving along a second predetermined path. Selection of the first predetermined path is configured to prevent the actuation body from accessing the second predetermined path.
ROBOTIC SURGICAL SYSTEM WITH ARTICULATION LOCKOUT
A surgical instrument includes a drive housing, a spline, a carriage, an elongate shaft assembly, an end effector, and an activating mechanism. The spline includes a drive gear rotatable via the spline. The shaft assembly extends along a longitudinal axis from the carriage. The shaft assembly includes a wrist disposed between the end effector and a distal end of the shaft assembly. The activating mechanism includes a barrel cam extending along a rotational axis and having a first cam profile radially extending about the rotational axis. The barrel cam is operatively coupled to the drive gear such that rotation of the drive gear is configured to actuate the activating mechanism to move at least a portion of the end effector or the shaft assembly. The first cam profile defines a lock zone configured to selectively lock movement of the portion of the end effector or the shaft assembly.
Automated end effector component reloading system for use with a robotic system
A surgical instrument. The surgical instrument includes an end effector that comprises a staple channel and an anvil that is movably translatable relative to the staple channel. A tool mounting portion is configured to interface with a robotic system and operably communicate with the end effector. The instrument further includes a first sensor that has an output that represents a first condition of a portion of the robotic system. A second sensor has an output that represents a position of the anvil. A third sensor has an output that represents a position of a reciprocating knife within the end effector. An externally accessible memory device communicates with the first, second and third sensors.
SEPARABLE SURGICAL INSTRUMENT JOINTS
In general, separable surgical instrument joints and methods of using separable surgical instrument joints are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, a surgical instrument includes a joint at which a distal tip of the surgical instrument is configured to articulate relative to an elongate shaft of the instrument. The surgical instrument is configured to move between first and second states. In the first state, the distal tip of the surgical instrument cannot be articulated relative to the elongate shaft. In the second state, the distal tip can be articulated relative to the elongate shaft.
RONGEURS AND OTHER MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS
Described herein are improved medical instruments, such as rongeurs. Some embodiments of the improved medical instruments include removable shafts, rotatable shafts, and mechanisms for removing and/or rotating the shafts or portions thereof. In some embodiments, the shaft has an upper and lower portion that are movable relative to one another and lock into one another using a pin-and-groove mechanism found on the inner surfaces of the upper and lower portions of the shaft.
