Apparatus and methods for monitoring objects in a surgical field

A system and method for performing a package status check are provided, including a scanner for use in a surgical field and having an antenna for emitting a radio frequency detection field, the scanner including control circuitry configured to determine a predetermined quantity of sponges corresponding to a complete pack of sponges; count a number of sponges associated with the pack with the scanner prior to use of the sponges in a surgical field; and issue an alert when a number of counted sponges does not match the predetermined quantity corresponding to the complete pack. The system and method may include the control circuitry configured to determine whether a sponge has been re-scanned or is unknown by comparing detected information with previously detected information prior.

Compactor and diverter for return items in a dispensing system

A scrubs returns cabinet for a hospital allows workers to return surgical garment tops and bottoms. A cabinet housing has a loading door leading to a return port through which the customer places the soiled scrub suit after entering customer identification information. The scrubs fall into a collection area and are dispersed by a diverter into the collection area. Additionally, a compacting paddle compacts the accumulating scrubs to utilize more of the collection area and accommodate more dirty scrubs before the collection area needs to be emptied. The scrubs are compressed by the compactor after being dispersed by the diverter.

A pharmaceutical waste disposal assembly includes a fluid receiver body for receiving fluid pharmaceutical waste, said fluid receiver body may comprise a material that is clear, opaque, or otherwise see-through and having a capacity. The assembly also includes a first reaction agent positioned within the fluid receiver body, the fluid pharmaceutical waste contacting the first reaction agent to change the fluid pharmaceutical waste in one of a chemical and physical manner so that the fluid pharmaceutical waste is rendered unrecoverable. The assembly also includes a fluid absorber positioned within said fluid receiver body, said fluid absorber configured to absorb and retain fluid pharmaceutical waste deposited in said fluid receiver body. The assembly also includes a moisture-sensitive visual indicator that changes color when fluid pharmaceutical waste deposited in said fluid receiver body has reached a predetermined percentage of said capacity of said fluid receiver body.

Method of Disposing of Waste Receiver, Waste Receiver for Pharmaceutical Waste and Method of Assembling the Waste Receiver

A waste disposal system (30) with a waste receiver (32) for receiving pharmaceutical waste material. A locking assembly (34) is secured to a fixed surface and actuated from a locked configuration to an unlocked configuration. A lock cylinder of the locking assembly may extend forward of a front wall (44) of a receiver body (36) of the waste receiver to engage a locking feature of a cover (82) in the locked configuration. A cover retention feature (124) may prevent axial decoupling of the cover from the receiver body. The receiver body may be formed from two shells (62,64). A reaction agent (150) is positioned within the container volume and spaced apart from a bottom wall of the receiver body. The reaction agent may be positioned within the container volume between the lock passageway (94) and/or a solid receiver volume, and opposing sidewalls of the receiver body. A support may maintain the position of the reaction agent within the container volume.
