LOWER LIMB PROSTHESIS

A lower limb prosthesis comprises an attachment section (10), a shin section (12), a foot section (14), a knee joint (16) pivotally connecting the attachment section (10) and the shin section (12), and an ankle joint (22) pivotally connecting the shin section (12) and the foot section (14). The knee joint includes a dynamically adjustable knee flexion control device (18) for damping knee flexion. The prosthesis further comprises a plurality of sensors (52, 53, 54, 85, 87) each arranged to generate sensor signals indicative of at least one respective kinetic or kinematic parameter of locomotion or of walking environment, and an electronic control system (100) coupled to the sensors (52, 53, 54, 85, 87) and to the knee flexion control device (18) in order dynamically and automatically to modify the flexion control setting of the knee joint (16) in response to signals from the sensors. When the inclination sensor signals indicate descent of a downward incline, the damping resistance of the knee flexion control device (18) is set to a first level during a major part of the stance phase of the gait cycle and to a second, lower level during a major part of the swing phase of the gait cycle. During an interval including a latter part of the stance phase, the knee flexion control device (18) is adjusted so that the damping resistance to knee flexion is between the first and second levels.

Prosthetic external fixation assembly for post-amputee ambulation

A fixation assembly for attaching a prosthetic leg and foot combination directly to an external ring fixation assembly via a protective socket, and yet allow full adjustment of length and offset, protection of the residual stump when in use, and quick-disconnect of the socket when not in use. The device is meant for use with any existing external fixation ring assembly for fixation to a femur or tibia, and any prosthetic leg/foot combination. The fixation assembly generally includes a molded concave socket having a mounting base at its apex for mounting the prosthetic leg/foot, an articulating ring adjustably attached to the socket, and a plurality of struts there between. Each strut has a first locking pivot joint at one end pivotally attached to the articulating ring and a second locking pivot joint at an opposing end pivotally attached to the rim of the socket. The articulating ring is removably attached to the external ring fixation assembly by a plurality of detent pins for releasable attachment.

A prosthetic apparatus and system for a trans-tibial amputee consisting of a post-operative interface socket that can be adjusted to accommodate the size of an amputated limb and changes in size of the limb. The prosthetic apparatus includes a lower socket into which the post-operative socket can be inserted, the lower socket being adjustable for changes in size of the post-operative interface socket. The post-operative socket also has a removable upper back shell that immobilizes movement of the knee during an initial recovery phase but can be removed to allow the knee of the amputee to flex.

Prosthetic feet having heel height adjustability

Prosthetic feet that allow for heel height adjustment and/or provide metatarsal joint functionality to more closely mimic natural human feet are provided. A prosthetic foot can include an ankle module having a locking mechanism configured to lock the heel at a particular height. The prosthetic foot can also include a toe region that adapts to varying heel heights. The ankle module and/or locking mechanism can be adjusted, controlled, and/or locked via a hydraulic mechanism. Knee orthoses or prostheses can be used to automatically, when appropriate, initiate a stand-up sequence based on the position of a person's knee with respect to the person's ankle while the person is in a seated position. When the knee is moved to a position that is forward of the ankle, at least one actuator of the orthosis or prosthesis is actuated to help raise the person from the seated position to a standing position.

A prosthetic foot can include an attachment member, at least one first brace, at least one first flexible member, an unpowered actuator, at least one second brace, and at least one second flexible member. A method for controlling autonomous wearable device collects kinetic signals from an array of sensors embedded in a prosthetic, orthotic or exoskeletal component, wherein all values are extracted from at least one feature of the collected kinetic signals, which are applied to a controller that generates a controlling command that is sent to the prosthetic, orthotic exoskeletal component to thereby control the prosthetic, orthotic or exoskeletal component during a portion of a gait cycle.
