A system is provided for processing documents. In particular, the system incorporates a feeder for feeding documents to a device for further processing of the documents. For instance, the system finds particular application in the field of document imaging in which a variety of documents of varying sizes and orientation are to be fed to an imaging system, such as a document scanner. The system may provide a sorting station that receives documents from a workstation and sorts the documents to a plurality of sort locations. The system may export the image data for the documents to a fileserver so that a remote operator can provide instructions for the processing of the documents so that the documents can be subsequently processed according to the instructions provided by the operator.

An inferring section (32) assigns based on the teacher model (54) an inferred annotation (82) to an inspection image (80) belonging to the same category to which the target image (50) belongs. An aiding section (34) aids a human to determine whether or not the inferred annotation (82) specifies the inspection image (80). A correcting section (36) generates a corrected model (86) in a manner to add a corrected annotation (84) to the inferred annotation (82) so that the inspection image (80) is specified.

The learning unit does not learn the correction characteristic of the difference portion in a case where a reliability level of the character recognition on the difference portion is equal to or above a predetermined threshold.

When a character required to be corrected is specified in a character string of a character recognition result, a plurality of candidate character strings are generated by using a substitution candidate for the specified character and not using a substitution candidate for a character other than the specified character, and one correct character string is finalized from the plurality of generated candidate character strings.

In example embodiments, techniques are provided for efficiently labeling, reviewing and correcting predictions for P&IDs in image-only formats. To label text boxes in the P&ID, the labeling application executes an OCR algorithm to predict a bounding box around, and machine-readable text within, each text box, and displays these predictions in its user interface. The labeling application provides functionality to receive a user confirmation or correction for each predicted bounding box and predicted machine-readable text. To label symbols in the P&ID, the labeling application receives user input to draw bounding boxes around symbols and assign symbols to classes of equipment. Where there are multiple occurrences of specific symbols, the labeling application provides functionality to duplicate and automatically detect and assign bounding boxes and classes. To label connections in the P&ID, the labeling application receives user input to define connection points at corresponding symbols and creates connections between the connection points.

A character recognition device is configured to convert characters on a scanned image obtained by reading a document into digital data. The character recognition device includes control circuitry. The control circuitry is configured to perform character recognition processing on the scanned image; generate data in which candidate characters or character strings of a character or character string recognized by the character recognition processing are associated with recognition degrees representing probabilities of the candidate characters or character strings; display a first candidate having a highest recognition degree among the candidate characters or character strings; and generate a document file in a format in which another candidate, other than the first candidate, of the candidate characters or character strings is displayed simultaneously with the first candidate, in association with the first candidate, and in a form different from a form of the first candidate.
