The data processor stores a fragility index which lists objects and different insulations which correspond to the listed objects. In use, shippers input the identification of an object to be shipped into the input device, and place the object on the scale for weight and dimensional determinations. The data processor analyzes the object's weight, fragility and dimensions to select a package and insulation for shipment.

A mail item sortation system and method that includes an external controller for culling candidate letters in a mailing job to produce groupings of letters based on industry average weights and/or thicknesses in order to place all the candidate letters going to a single address adjacent to each other, an internal controller, interfaced with the external controller, that utilizes the groupings of letters to manage multiple letter sorters, wherein a specific letter sorter is selected to pair a calculated number of pockets to accommodate the groupings with an actual number of pockets in the selected letter sorter, and a transfer process for moving letters within the letter sorter pockets to a StatementPack machine.

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for measuring package dimensions. The systems and methods may include determining, by a computing device comprising a processor, pixel locations of a plurality of corners of a package within an image. The systems and methods may also include determining, by the computing device, the package dimensions based on the pixel locations.

A weighing scale with a platform on which objects for shipment are placed, and in communication with the computer terminal, reports a measured weight of the object. An imaging device is disposed in proximity to the weighing scale and positioned to have a field of view extending beyond the platform of the weighing scale. The imaging device is in communication with the computer terminal to transmit captured image data of the object placed on the platform. The data processor generates dimensional parameters along a plurality of axes based on the image data, and a new shipping record with the dimensional parameters and the measured weight of the object.

In accordance with an embodiment, a package management system comprises a measurement device and an output device. The measurement device having a platform on which a package for measurement is to be placed, a camera positioned to capture an image of the package placed on the platform, a weight sensor configured to measure a weight of the package placed on the platform, and a processor configured to determine a length, a width, and a height of the package based on the captured image. The output device connected to a network and configured to output onto the network first information indicating the length, the width, and the height of the package and second information indicating the weight of the package.
