ELECTRIC POWER ASSET HEALTH MONITORING

A method of directly measuring moisture content in an oil-filled transformer includes using an optical fiber that having a grating sensor, such as a Fiber Bragg grating, defined in the optical fiber. The various conductors (windings) in the transformer are insulated using an insulator such as paper and insulating oil is filled inside the transformer. Moisture in the transformer is absorbed by the paper that surrounds the windings. A moisture content at a specific location can be measured by placing the optical fiber with the grating sensor directly at the specific location to be measured. A physical parameter of the paper that absorbed moisture changes over time, causing a change in the grating sensor of the optical fiber which changes the spectral response of optical signals that are reflected by the grating sensor. The method provides an accurate method of measuring the moisture inside the transformer at the specific location.

The invention is a system and method to measure oil content in water utilizing the fluorescence of oil emitted under excitation by laser. Oil and water mixture is transferred through the system to a measurement section in a microscope, which produces high resolution 3-dimensional images of the oil and water mixture with the fluorescence. The images are analyzed to calculate the amount of oil in water and oil droplets distribution. The image is also analyzed to distinguish oil coated solids from oil droplets, and to calculate the sizes and volumes of the solids.

A system and method for determining whether a working fluid being used in a machine is near its failure point. The system includes an impedance/admittance sensor having a flow chamber through which the working fluid flows and a pair of spaced apart electrodes. A function generator generates frequency signals at certain frequencies over a range of frequencies and a sensor circuit receives the frequency signals and provides the frequency signals to the electrodes, where the conductance of the working fluid creates a measurement signal in the sensor circuit. A processor is responsive to the measurement signal and generates a relationship between the frequency signals and the measurement signal that is indicative of a contamination level of the working fluid.
