Supporting a configuration of a device

A positioning support device transmits radio signals using at least one default configuration parameter value. A mobile device measures characteristics of the signals at different locations. An apparatus assembles, based on the measured characteristics and indications of the locations of measurement, data which enables a determination of characteristics of radio signals transmitted by the positioning support device, which are expected to be observable at different locations. The apparatus determines in addition at least one adapted configuration parameter value and causes the positioning support device to store the assembled data for future transmissions and to use the at least one adapted configuration parameter value for future transmissions. As a result, the positioning support device transmits radio signals including the stored data using the at least one adapted configuration parameter value.

An apparatus or an add-on module for a, in particular mobile, device, is disclosed. In an embodiment, the device to be localized or the add-on module uses a measuring unit to measure, via suitable sensors, a local electromagnetic field distribution generated by a given infrastructure. An instantaneous position of the add-on module or of the device equipped therewith is then determined by comparing the measured field distribution with a specified map. In order to facilitate tracking of the add-on module or of the device, the measured field distribution and/or the determined position can be sent via a wireless data connection to a server unit.

Electromagnetic reflection profiles

Methods, systems, and products determine electromagnetic reflective characteristics of ambient environments. A wireless communications device sends a cellular impulse and receives reflections of the cellular impulse. The cellular impulse and the reflections of the cellular impulse may be compared to determine the electromagnetic reflective characteristics of an ambient environment.

Supporting positioning quality assurance

An apparatus obtains fingerprints that have been collected by at least one mobile device for supporting a positioning of other mobile devices. Each fingerprint comprises results of measurements on radio signals of at least one communication node at a particular location and an indication of the particular location. The apparatus determines a positioning quality that can be achieved in a positioning which is based on obtained fingerprints collected by the at least one mobile device. The apparatus generates, based on the determined positioning quality, a feedback to a user of the at least one mobile device, the feedback indicating whether further fingerprints should be collected.

Systems and methods of deploying location tracking tags

A tag having a fixed physical location comprising a processor, a memory storing a first identifier, and a wireless communication interface configured to broadcast a first transmission including the first identifier. The processor is configured to receive, from the wireless communication interface, second identifiers of neighboring tags. The processor then configured to store the second identifiers of the neighboring tags in the memory and then modify the first transmission of the first identifier to include the second identifiers of the neighboring tags.

Techniques are described for providing assistance data corresponding to a plurality of access points (APs). The techniques include, in part, providing assistance data to a mobile device. The assistance data comprises group data that is common among the plurality of APs. The group data is associated with a group identifier (ID). The techniques further include providing the group ID and a set of AP-specific information for at least one of the plurality of APs. The group data may include information corresponding to a common grid, common location area and/or common characteristics of the APs.

In one embodiment, a technique is provided for wireless position determination wherein identification information and positional information about wireless beacons is downloaded to a local database of a wireless computing device from a central database. The local database is usable by a wireless positioning system of the wireless computing device to estimate a position of the wireless computing device. A receiver unit of the wireless computing device may receive signals from wireless beacons that include a least one new wireless beacon not included in the local database. The wireless positioning system estimates positional information of the at least one new wireless beacon based on the position of the wireless computing device. Identification information and positional information for the at least one new wireless beacon is added to the local database. Thereafter, a contribution may be uploaded to the central database for the at least one wireless beacon, to further build the central database.

Extending a radio map

A method comprising: receiving a radio map of an indoor venue using survey data collected by a survey device positioned throughout the venue, the radio map including a boundary; receiving harvest data from a mobile device, wherein at least some of the harvest data are obtained by the mobile device while the mobile device is positioned at locations that are outside of the boundary; determining, based on the harvest data, a trajectory of the mobile device, wherein at least some of the trajectory resides outside of the boundary; identifying one or more locations on or proximate to the trajectory; and extending the radio map using the survey data and the one or more identified locations, wherein the extended radio map is defined at least in part by an extension of the boundary to encompass the one or more identified locations.

RADIO MAP IMPROVEMENTS

Disclosed is a solution for managing a radio map based on radio fingerprinting measurements. A method comprises: acquiring a radio map of an area, the radio map based on radio frequency measurements performed between at least one access node of a wireless network and terminal devices within the area; detecting at least one gap in the radio map and determining geographical coordinates of the at least one gap; causing transmission of a message comprising at least one information element requesting for additional measurements and comprising the geographical coordinates of the at least one gap; in response to the message, receiving at least one radio frequency measurement report related to at least one terminal device and comprising radio frequency measurement data and at least one measurement location where the radio frequency measurement data has been measured; and updating the radio map on the basis of the radio frequency measurement data.
